Sam was born July 12, 1927, in Sturgis, SD, to Samuel and Nina (Wilson) Hatty, Jr. In 1945, Sam served in the South Pacific as a Seabee during World War II. On August 8, 1946, Sam married Caroline Jastorff, and together they had two children.

In 1948, the couple moved to Montana, going wherever the highway led them, first to Miles City, then Billings, and eventually Havre. Sam worked for the Montana Department of Transportation for 38 ½ years, beginning his career as a survey crew member, and eventually working his way up to division engineer before retirement.

His hobbies included woodworking and playing pool. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, not as a hobby, but more as part of living life in Montana. Sam was a Boy Scout leader for about 15 years, and he and Caroline were also members of Messiah Lutheran Church.

Sam is survived by his wife, Caroline Hatty; two children, Samuel (Edna) Hatty IV and Gerry (Greg) Dolven; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his grandson Douglas Dolven; parents, Sam and Nina Hatty, Jr .; and sister, Mae Linzmeier.
