The Rotary Youth Golf Camp starts today at Prairie Farms. The course is also host to a new junior league this summer, which starts July 2.
It's Rotary Golf Camp week at Prairie Farms Golf Course, but the annual camp, which runs today through Thursday, isn't the only way youth golfers can enhance and grow their game this summer.
A new golfing feature will get underway at Prairie Farms shortly, with a group of Havre golfers starting a Youth Golf League, which will be open to boys and girls entering grades 6-9.
The youth league will feature instruction, free range balls and nine holes of golf. The golf will be patterned after the growingly popular Operation 36 program, which encourages youth golfers to shoot a 36 on nine holes from different parts of the course.
The youth league will begin July 2 and run each Tuesday through Aug. 6. It's open to the first 15 golfers to sign up. For more information, contact Jeremy Jensen at 406-805-7428.
Speaking of the Havre Rotary Club, I'd like to remind everyone that the sign-up sheet is now up at Prairie Farms for the annual Rotary Blast Golf Tournament, which will be held July 14. The tournament is one of the best on the Hi-Line in my opinion, due to its two-man, modified stableford scoring system. The MSU-Northern Diesel Technology Tournament is also coming soon to Beaver Creek Golf Course.
In league golf, last week marked the start of the second half of the men's league season at Prairie Farms. Last Tuesday night saw Patrick Construction earn high-team honors with 23.5 points. The team was composed of Jeff Brandon, Ken Wagner, Tom Patrick and Brett Patrick. Jeremy Jensen and Kyle Sheppard each shot even-par 36 to share low gross, while Jacob Lorang was low net at 30.5.
Last Wednesday night, in howling conditions, Independence Bank was high team with 22.5 points. Byron Ophus, Matt Wertheimer, Deven Donoven and Dennis Murphy made up the squad. Murphy and Cal Wirtzberger (who dominated me), shared low net at 32, while Jimmy Kato was low gross with an even 36.
In ladies league last Thursday night at Prairie Farms, Patrick Construction was high team with 25.5 points. Katie Heath, Sue Armstrong, Kathy Peterson and Sarah Christenson made up the team. Ali Ward shot a 38 for low gross, while Karla Bolken was low net with a 30.
Men's league also continued at BCGC last Thursday night with Chvilicek Farms earning high-team honors. The team is made up of Alex Chvilicek, Walynn Burgess, Scott Miller and Chris Mattson. Kyle Miller and Gus Bacon tied for low gross, each shooting 38, while Mattson was low net at 30.5.
