Skip was born February 9, 1965, in El Paso, Texas, to Damon and Berta (Watson) Owens. The family moved to Havre when he was young. He attended Havre High School where he excelled in track, graduating in 1984.

After graduation, he worked as a mechanic at Heltne's Service Station. On January 24, 1986, Skip married Darla (Darter) Owens, and over the next several years the couple welcomed three children into their lives. During this time, they lived in Wyoming and Cut Bank, MT, before settling back in Havre in 1992. The couple divorced in 2012. While living in Havre, he was employed by Kafka Farms, Kraske Farms, and most recently C & C Excavation.

Skip loved spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren. He had a heart of gold, always willing to help anyone in need. His favorite things to do with his family and friends included: hunting, fishing, attending black powder shoots, grilling, dancing, and watching his favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys. He always had a love for animals, and he enjoyed providing the best of care for his parents in their later years.

Skip is preceded in death by his sister Julie and his parents, Damon and Berta Owens.

Left to cherish his memory are his children Julie, (Robert) Sparks, Christopher "Bud" Owens, and Amanda Owens; grandchildren, Noah Barrett, Kodi and Lexi Sparks, Leighton Owens, and Mackenzie St. Marks; mother of his children, Darla Owens; sister Kemi (Mark) Velk; brothers, Randy (Mary) Owens and Andy (Christy) Owens, all of the above from Havre. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family; special friend Tobey Schlotfeldt; and his beloved dog Red.
