New extension agent, county superintendent introduced

Hill County officials were introduced at their meeting Thursday morning to two new officials, Hill County Superintendent Marie Deegan and Hill County Extension Agriculture Agent Tom Allen.

The Ag/4-H position has been empty since March of this year. Allen will start Monday and his duties will include working with farmers and producers in the agriculture and natural resources fields, as well as sharing 4-H Youth Development responsibilities.

“In those five months the need for Tom’s position was felt in our office because we get a lot of questions related to trees, plants, gardens, livestock, etc.,” Hill County Extension Agent/4-H Agent Jasmine Carbajal said.

Carbajal said Allen is from the Hi-Line and brings an immense amount of experience to this position.

“We are all ready to welcome him into his new role,” she said.

Watch for more on Deegan and Allen taking their new positions in upcoming editions of the Havre Daily News.

In health department news, Hill County Public Health Director Kim Larson said the department has a job opening for a family planning coordinator as Wanda Meredith’s last day will be next Thursday.

The department also received a bat that tested positive for rabies after biting someone, Larson said.

She said she has also received two reports of harmful algal blooms possible on Beaver Creek Reservoir and Bear Paw Lake.

“Stay out of the water if you see any algae on top of the water that looks like latex paint, grass clippings, or pea soup on top of the water,” Larson said.

Hill County Mosquito Control District Supervisor Terry Turner said the mosquito buzz has been good in the area. He said Sheridan, Yellowstone and Cascade Countites have all tested positive for West Nile.

He added that three horses died last week due to water hemlock found in Bear Paw Mountain pastures.

“Beaver Creek Park is a prime candidate for water hemlock.” Turner said. “I encourage people to look on the internet to what a water hemlock looks like. All it takes is one bite and the animal is down and usually drops them around 50 yards from where they bit.”

In other business, a human resources position personnel had been filled by Christine Muller.

Muller said all county job openings will be posted on the county website at http://www.hillcounty.us under the human resources tab and she will also be partnering with the Havre Daily News advertising to post the job openings.

“I already did do the safety training presentation for new hires and I’m working on new hire orientation now,” Muller said. “I’m also working on performance management for supervisors training and discrimination harassment training.”

“It is fabulous for our office to have Christine and she really has been on the ball this first week and getting things done,” Hill County Commissioner Diane McLean said.

The next County Officials meeting will be held Thursday, Sept. 19 in Timmons Room in the Hill County Courthouse.
