Lights tumble at EOU

Mounties start fast, hold MSU-N offense down on Saturday night in LaGrande

The Montana State University-Northern Lights opened their season with a nighttime road win at Arizona Christian. But in their second night game of the season, the Lights had no such like.

Saturday night in LaGrande, Oregon, Northern was thumped by the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers, 47-7, as EOU celebrated homecoming at Community Stadium.

The loss dropped Northern to 0-5 in the Frontier Conference and 1-5 overall.

After a fumble on the first play from scrimmage by MSU-N, the Mountaineers capitalized on the turnover and the short field as senior running back Victor Dias punched it in from one yard out. Before the end of the first, EOU got the ball back and scored on its second possession, capped off on a 13-yard pass from quarterback Kai Quinn to tight end Conner Falk.

On the last drive of the half, EOU went seven plays for 42 yards as running back Kaler Moore scored 11 yards out, making it 21-0 at halftime.

The Mounties came out of the halftime locker room and added to their lead as kicker Jaiden Machuca remained perfect on the year with a 30-yard field goal.

The Lights finally got on the board with 5:45 left in the third quarter as quarterback Brenden Medina hit Damari Caul-Davis in the corner of the end zone for 18 yards.

But it was too little too late as EOU continued to pull away by scoring the last 21 points of the contest.

Northern had its struggles on both sides of the ball. The offense managed just 239 total yards, and had three interceptions, while EOU racked up over 500 yards of offense on the other side of the ball. Medina threw for 149 yards and a score, while Jett Robertson rushed for 46 yards and Cameron Taylor added 43. Caul-Davis had a huge game for the Lights, with nine catches for 114 yards.

Defensively, Northern was led by Hunter Riley’s 11 tackles, while Jaren Maki had nine stops, two tackles for loss and an interception. Ostin Welch also had his second INT of the year.

The Lights will try and halt their five-game losing streak when they return to Blue Pony Stadium to host the Rocky Mountain College Battlin’ Bears. Northern fell to the Bears in a shootout last month in Billings.
