Black powder Christmas turkey shoot held

The Bullhook Bottoms Black Powder Club held its annual Christmas Turkey Shoot Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Hill County Sports Shooting Range on River Road west of Havre.

Eighteen shooters participated in the afternoon event with six matches, all five shots each, at various distances and positions. Shooting conditions were excellent with temperatures in high 40s with a very light breeze part of the afternoon. Sounds early for a Christmas shoot, but we keep moving it up to find some decent weather to shoot in, since it looks like winter may start coming early and stay late. The winners of the matches were:

25-yard Pistol: 1st Dick Hanson, Havre, 41x; 2nd Pete Huseby, Havre, 41; 3rd Tom Brown, Havre, 38.

25-yard Offhand: 1st Pete Huseby, Havre, 44; 2nd Randy Owens, Havre, 42; 3rd Kent More- house, Glasgow, 41x.

50-yard Offhand: 1st Cameron Griggs, Havre, 43; 2nd Dick Hanson, Havre, 43; 3rd Kent More- house, Glasgow, 43.

50-yard Cross Sticks: 1st Cameron Griggs, Havre, 48x; 2nd Jim Griggs, Havre, 48; 3rd Bob Doney, Havre, 46.

50-yard Cross Sticks (6-bull target): 1st Bob Doney, Havre, 42; 2nd Cliff Plum, Havre 42; 3rd Pete Huseby, Havre, 41.

50-yard Offhand Cartridge: 1st Mike Otterberg, Glasgow, 44; 2nd Cliff Plum, Havre, 43; 3rd Dick Hanson, Havre, 43.

In keeping with the holiday spirit, contestants could win only one turkey for the day. Eighteen places were paid out giving every shooter a turkey this year. There were only two sub-juniors shooting, Sidney Griggs, scoring 40 on a 25-yard cross stick match and Luke Griggs, scoring 6.
