Speech tournament judging clinic set for Wednesday

Press release

Havre High School speech and debate coach Tim Leeds said he wanted to remind people that the speech and debate team is hosting a clinic Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the high school library for people interested in judging this weekend.

Leeds said 15 schools are coming to Havre to compete at the invitational tournament Saturday, and the team wants to invite anyone to see the skills and talents students from Havre and the region are bringing. People can learn about judging and immerse themselves for a few hours in the experience.

“These kids often have pretty amazing pieces or performances,” Leeds said.

He said the response from judges so far has been good, but the tournament is a little bigger than Havre usually sees and having more judging would be helfpful.

“Some conflicting events have come up for some of our judges, too, so we have some openings,” Leeds said.

The tournament has rounds at 9 and 10:30 a.m., noon and 2 p.m., he said, with all Class A and Class BC events offered. He added that more judges are typically needed at 2 p.m., so openings are available there.

People can contact Leeds at [email protected] or register as a judge online at http://bit/ly/Havrespeech2019 .

Leeds said that at Wednesday’s judging clinic he will be going over the different events, how rounds work, the ballots and how they are used, and what to look for in the different events.
