Northern inks HHS volleyball star Jessa Chvilicek

It was a great day for Havre High senior Jessa Chvilicek. Friday afternoon, Chvilicek took the next step forward in her volleyball career and signed with the Montana State University-Northern Skylights.

The excitement was at high levels for both the Havre and Northern volleyball teams, as the Ponies will get to see a stellar player move forward and play for her hometown college program. In the Skylights' case, Chvilicek is another big signee that will give the team some more major skill to work with.

MSU-Northern head coach Jerry Wagner is excited to add another standout talent to his team, especially from Havre.

"I feel great," said Wagner. "I graduated from Havre High and started this program. I've been involved in three of them (other Chviliceks) and Jessa is the first one that I'll be able to coach. This is really special for that reason."

Wagner has gained a very huge local talent in Chvilicek. In her senior year, Chvilicek has been a force upfront for the Blue Ponies. When it comes to blocks and kills, Chvilicek has put up some big numbers.

So far this season, Chvilicek has racked up 67-plus kills and 21-plus blocks. On top of that, her intensity on the court and knowledge of the game will serve the Skylights well in the future. With Chvilicek on the roster, the possibilities and potential for the Northern club will keep rising. Chvilicek is a three-sport standout at Havre, who also plays basketball and runs track and field.

Why did Chvilicek chose MSU-Northern for her college career? It is a simple answer.

"I kind of just wanted to stay home," said Chvilicek during her signing at the HHS gymnasium. "I didn't really want to leave (Havre) and I wanted to play volleyball. Northern has a great team."

Chvilicek's signing has another big element in it. The Skylights will be saying goodbye to two talented seniors this season and adding Chvilicek to the squad will give them an exciting new talent to utilize when the seniors depart.

College volleyball is very intense and the players are expected to give it their all at a higher level. In Chvilicek's case, her intensity and passion for the game will allow her to fit right in the MSU-Northern atmosphere. Chvilicek has shown she can rise up to and surpass the expectations given to her.

Along with that, Chvilicek has another element she wishes to bring to the team and hopefully leave an impact on the program.

"I just want to bring my good spirit," Chvilicek said. "I think I have a pretty goo attitude. I just want to have fun with it."

All-in-all, Chvilicek will look to have fun on the Skylights' team and will be the only local athlete on the squad. It has been some time since MSU-N has had a Blue Pony listed on its team. Holly Cartwright was the last Blue Pony to play for Northern.

"I'm happy for my team," said Wagner. "We're getting another outstanding teammate and it's going to add, immediately, what we're trying to do athletically, community-wise and person-wise. We got some great people on the team and I couldn't be prouder to have Jessa on board."

Chvilicek is the fourth signee for Wagner's 2020 recruiting class. The Skylights host Carroll College tonight in the Armory Gymnasium, while the Blue Ponies are off until next week's Eastern A Divisional, which will take place in the HHS gymnasium.
