BOZEMAN — It was a day of firsts at Bobcat Stadium on Saturday. Coming off two straight losses, 14th-ranked Montana State regrouped and dropped visiting Southern Utah, 42-7.

After two Lane Sumner rushing touchdowns gave the Bobcats (6-3 overall, 3-2 Big Sky Conference) a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter, quarterback Tucker Rovig found freshman Jaden Smith open down the right sideline for a 47-yard score. It was the first reception and the first touchdown of Smith's Bobcat career, and made the score 21-0 after the first quarter.
