Blue Pony girls cruise on the road

This last weekend was a big one for many teams across Montana, as conference play was getting exciting early on.

Among those games were those in the Northeast A in Class A, where the Havre High girls basketball team took on two new conference rivals in the Glendive Lady Devils and the Miles City Cowgirls.

The Blue Ponies were lined up for some tough games, but Havre took care of business and rocked both Glendive, who they beat 69-30 Friday on the road, and the Cowgirls, who they throttled 70-23 Saturday in Miles City.

The game against the Lady Devils set the tone for how the Ponies look to get on top of the Northeast A. Havre kept Glendive in a hole throughout most of the game, keeping the Devils from scoring no more than 12 points in every quarter.

Havre led the game with a dominant performance, snagging the lead early 22-8. The Ponies went on to put up 19 in the second quarter, while Glendive put up 12, which was their best quarter in the game. HHS kept the lead strong at 41-20 at the half.

The third quarter was where the Blue Ponies sealed the win over their conference rival with a 26 point extravaganza, meanwhile holding the Lady Devils to just six points. Havre would lead 67-26 going into the fourth quarter.

The final eight minutes of the game was the only time that Glendive outscored the Ponies in a quarter. But, the Havre defense kept consistent throughout the day and only allowed four points in the fourth quarter, while only scoring two. Safe to say, the Ponies opened their conference play with a statement win over the Lady Devils.

The game Saturday against Miles City continued to solidify that statement, as the Blue Pony offense and defense drove Havre to a blowout victory over the Cowgirls. While the offense dropped 70 points on the day, the defense held Miles City to just 23 points.

The two wins over the weekend propel the Ponies to a 3-1 record on the year. Now, Havre’s next two games will be up against opponents outside of Class A.

The first game will be against Class AA Great Falls Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Havre High Gymnasium, followed by a road-game against Class B Malta Jan. 4 at 5:30 p.m. in Malta.
