Bill was born January 29, 1930, in Havre to Guy and Theresa (Schnitzmeier) Nelson. He was raised on the farm 25 miles north of Havre, attending elementary school at St. Joe. He moved into Havre to attend junior high and high school, rooming with his sisters. After his graduation from Havre High School in 1947, Bill worked for the railroad for a year or two before entering the U.S. Army. He served until his honorable discharge in 1952, and returned home to farm with his parents. They retired in 1970, and he continued to farm until his own retirement in 1991, when he sold the farm and moved into Havre.

Bill was an independent, hilarious man who loved to pull pranks. He enjoyed gardening, caring for his yard and flowers, traveling to visit his sisters, hunting, fishing, going to the senior center where he played cards and going to the casinos. Bill absolutely loved children, and his nieces and their children were treated as though they were his children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Theresa Nelson, and his sister Helen Madsen.

Bill is survived by his sister Lorraine Schweitzer of Butte; nieces, Merla (Jack Young) Hamilton of Lloyd and Wanda (Henry) Hislop of Butte; two great-nieces; and four great-nephews.
