Havre girls throttle Red Devils, Cowgirls

Blue Ponies claim first-ever Northeast A regular season title

The past two years have been magical for the Havre High girls basketball team, especially within conference play, going undefeated in the last two seasons.

The goal to do that once again is hitting home this year and the Blue Ponies looked to keep a conference win streak alive against some Northeast A competition.

And Havre did just that with a Friday win over the Glendive Red Devils, 69-36 and the Miles City Cowgirls 75-22 Saturday in the Havre High gymnasium.

The matchup versus the Red Devils opened the great weekend, and Havre opened the first quarter strong. The Ponies went on a 10-0 run early on after being down, followed by a Kyndall Keller 4-0 run to lead 23-10 at the end of the first stanza.

The second period continued Havre's dominance with Loy Waid scoring and Keller free throws, followed by baskets by Kadia Miller and Sadie Filius. Glendive battled back within the period, but the Ponies kept the lead at 37-20 at the intermission.

Miller had a good first half for HHS and was glad about how the team did against the Red Devils.

"I thought we did amazing," Kadia Miller said. "We came out with energy, as a team and we just worked our butts off."

The third stanza saw Miller, Kylie Walker and Keller adding more baskets, with Glendive responding with a mix of field goals and free throws, but the Ponies kept ahead with a quick 6-0 run, with Katie Wirtzberger adding some free throws at the end, to lead 54-33.

In the fourth period, Wirtzberger opened a huge 15-0 run, capped off by two free throws by Yelena Miller to add the first victory of the weekend to Havre's list.

Wirtzberger put in some work on the court to help her team to a Northeast A win and was happy with the results.

"It was fast and fun," Wirtzberger said. "It got a little bit slow, but it was fun all the way around. The toughest challenge was getting ready to go, like mentally, every single person ready to go, but we pulled it through."

And the Blue Ponies pulled through another win against the Cowgirls Saturday.

Keller, Waid, Filius and Kadia Miller opened the first period against Miles City with a 10-0 run, followed by a 14-0 run, adding Jessa Chvilicek to the list, to end of the first quarter with a 24-2 lead. The second stanza was slower for both teams, but the Ponies opened it by going on a 12-0 run, along with a Filius free throw to take a 37-6 lead into hafltime.

Waid had a consistent first half for HHS and was happy to see what the team put forward on the court against the Cowgirls.

"I thought we did really good," Waid said. "We just really pushed the ball and had a lot of teamwork."

Havre continued to stay on top in the third quarter with a couple short runs and a big 15-0 run, with Chvilicek making some noise and dropping baskets, to drive forward and stay ahead 68-17. The final eight minutes saw the Blue Ponies cruise home to victory.

Chvilicek put up a great game alongside Waid and her team. Chvilicek was glad to see the team's efforts pay off against Miles City.

"It was lots of fun to play," Chvilicek said. "We had a good atmosphere in the Corral, as always. I think we pushed the ball a lot, had good energy the whole time and good defense and talking. It was a lot of fun."

Over the weekend, there were some great performances. Against the Red Devils, Keller led the team with a big 30-point game, followed by Filius with 15 points. Versus the Cowgirls, Keller once again led the Ponies with 20 points, followed by Chvilicek with 14.

Havre (11-1) will face off against Class AA CMR Thursday on the road in Great Falls, followed by a matchup versus the Malta M-Ettes in the Havre High Gymnasium Saturday.
