Hi-Line sends four to the B-C podium

Fort Benton/Big Sandy hangs tough, but Circle wins third straight Class C crown

BILLINGS - The four teams representing the Hi-Line at the Class B-C state tournament didn't quite find their way into the trophy hunt this weekend inside the First Interstate Bank Arena at the Metra.

That doesn't mean, however, that those four squads didn't have success in their own ways.

Fort Benton/Big Sandy finished second in the Class C race and had two All-State performers in Trevor O'Hara (103) and Hayden Axtmen (182). The Longhorns scored 36 points for what was a very strong showing in Billings.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters also went out in style Saturday afternoon when sophomore heavyweight Wyatt Dunbar beat Hi-Line rival Reubin Swenson of Chester-Joplin-Inverness for fifth.

"We went back-and-forth all year," Dunbar said. "And he beat me at divisionals. So that was probably the biggest reason why I won today."

Dunbar pinned Swenson, who was All-State for the second straight year, to earn the win, which capped an incredible run by Dunbar, who's only losses came to stars Mason Phipps of Glasgow, and returning state champion Trey Yates of Colstrip.

"As a sophomore, I never thought I'd get this far," Dunbar said. "It's a dream come true really."

Dunbar was one of three Sugarbeeters to score points. Reily Wiegand (182) and Tyler Schoen (152) also won matches for longtime head coach Perry Miller. Chinook finished with 22 points on the weekend.

The Longhorns also got points from Colter Ball (160) and heavyweights Stetson LeFurgey and Brock Hanford, as the co-op with Big Sandy made an early run at Circle, which won the Class C state championship for the second straight year. O'Hara led the way by reaching the semifinals before finishing sixth, while Axtmen won back-to-back matches after falling in the quarterfinals, to get on the podium.

Swenson was CJI's only wrestler in the field, and he got on the podium for the second year in a row. He also finished sixth last year for the Hawks. Harlem got three points from Mikkel Rider at 205 pounds in head coach Lyle Faulkinberry's return to the state tournament.

While Circle took home the Class C trophy, Glasgow scored 154 points to beat Huntley Project in the Class B title chase. The Scotties finished a close second to Colstrip last season, but this weekend, they captured their 13th state title in school history. Circle won its third straight Class C title.
