Blue Pony Jacob Miller to swim at NCAA DII Adams State

Another Havre Blue Pony is headed to compete in a collegiate sport.

Havre High senior Jacob Miller has signed with the Adams State University Grizzlies swim team. ASU is located in Alamosa, Colorado, in the San Luis Valley, and the Grizzlies compete in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at the NCAA Division II level.

And Miller was relieved to finally decide where he wanted to go after high school.

"The coach approached me and was really wanting me to go there," Miller said. "He was doing everything he could to make it financially available for me and had times to meet the team. They have really good facilities and have the programs I'm wanting to do for my career. It was kind of surreal, but it was a huge relief. I've been really trying to find a college that fits me best and was financially able."

It is clear to see why ASU head coach Quint Seckler wanted Miller to compete for the Grizzlies. After all, Miller capped off his high school career with the Blue Ponies on a high note.

Not only was Miller a part of the 2018-2019 Havre boys team that tied with Billings Central for the Class A-B boys state championship in his junior year, but Miller followed up with an individual gold medal for the 100-yard breaststroke for his senior year with the Ponies. Needless to say, Miller turned quite a few heads as a great potential collegiate swimmer.

At the end of the day, Seckler was excited to land Miller and add him to the Grizzlies program.

"I found him on one of the recruiting websites and the thing that stood out initially was that he was an excellent student," Seckler said. "But when I talked to him on the phone, he's just an awesome young man. Not just academically, but personality-wise. He's a solid swimmer. I think he has extreme size and his potential for becoming a really solid swimmer really stands out. We're looking for quality kids first, and kids that we can work with. He obviously enjoys swimming, and I'm going to enjoy him as a part of our team."

Another big trait that Miller carries with him is his support for his team. Miller's positivity is something that spreads throughout his entire team and allows him to create a great bond with his teammates. Miller has quite a bit of fun with the meets for Havre, as well, often shouting "Away!" as his teammates dive into the water to start their event. Miller is a swimmer who lifts his team up to do better, while he is improving himself at the same time.

And that kind of thing is what Miller hopes to do for the Grizzlies, as well as meet some personal fitness goals.

"I'd like to see myself improve and by proxy see the team improve," Miller said. "I want to get in really good shape. I want to get fast and I want to get huge. I'm hoping to come back for Christmas and be ripped. But I want to see myself and the team improve overall."

Swimming is not the only thing that Miller excels in, as he is a 4.0 student at HHS. On top of that. Miller has already registered for the 2020-2021 school year down at ASU, with hopes to make his mark in the classroom there as well.

"I'm looking to do a pre-dental program or it's a pre-pharmacy," Miller said. "Just basic classes to prepare me for possibly going into something in the medical field. I want to prepare myself for my job."

With that, Miller has his future set before him. The Blue Pony swimming standout has a lot to look forward with the Grizzlies and furthering his career at the collegiate level. It has been a wild ride for Miller since he started swimming back in middle school and now, he is off to do great things for ASU, both in the pool and classroom.
