Havre Walk for Water goes virtual in COVID-19 pandemic

"Every Step You Take is One They Won't Have to," the second annual World Vision Global 6K for Water, is still set for Saturday, May 16, but with a tweak due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 6K walk will occur virtually this year.

"Team World Vision decided that, out of precaution, that they would transfer it to a virtual event and that means even though I'm in Havre, Montana, anyone across the world because there are actually teams worldwide, not just the United States, so anyone who knows me and wants to be on my team now can, and they actually don't have do it in Havre," Havre Walk4Water Team Captain April Taber said. "Virtually meaning that they can do it on their treadmill, go walk through a park, the track, go on a hike or however you want to do it it's kind of your race now."

She said people can complete the 6K between now and May 16.

To join Taber's team, people can go to https://www.teamworldvision.org/team/walk4water-Havre .

Taber said the 6k Walk4Water is a global event that was created by World Vision, a nonprofit Christian organization.

It costs $50 to register and people interested can sign up or donate at register through the event's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/events/s/havres-2nd-annual-6k-for-water/880730059009712/ .

Taber added that the registration fee is set at $50 because $50 provides clean water for one person for their whole life.

To make a donation online: https://www.teamworldvision.org/participant/AprilT or make a check out to World Vision and mail it to April Taber at 668 Fifth Street North, Havre, MT, 59501.

She said for people to include a personal email on check to receive receipt confirmation.

"All of the funds raised go to World Vision to help provide clean water to underdeveloped countries," she said. "Six kilometers, which is 3.72 miles, is the average distance people walk in developing countries for water and often that water is unsafe to drink."

Clean water is more than drinking water, she said, it also is washing hands, bathing, cooking and so on.

After someone registers for the walk they will receive a  T-shirt, a race bib and a finisher medal, she said.

She added that the race bib shows a picture of a child on it who is available for child sponsorship if people are also interested in that.

"This is something that impacts people clear across the globe, so do what you can to help," Taber said. "The event allows social distancing, but a fun activity for the whole family."
