MDT looks for comment on highway work between Fort Benton and Havre

HAVRE — The Montana Department of Transportation would like to announce and invite the public to comment on a proposal install safety enhancements along US 87.

The proposed work includes adding safety measures at the following three sites:

Site 1 — Install “cross traffic does not stop” plaques below existing stop signs and add retroreflective strip to stop signposts at the intersection of US 87 & Secondary 223 near Fort Benton.

Site 2 — Install curve warning signs for curve near RP 106, and panel delineation RP 105.9 — RP 107.2 south of Havre.

Site 3 — Install 1-2 luminaires for destination lighting, install double “stop ahead” signs and double oversized “stop” signs on Old Post Rd. Add “cross-traffic does not stop” plaque to stop sign, add additional double-sided arrow sign to the left of existing sign south of Havre.

The purpose of the project is to reduce the frequency and severity of intersection and roadway departure crashes.

Construction is tentatively planned for 2021 depending on completion of design and availability of funds. New right-of-way and relocation of utilities will be required. MDT staff will contact all affected landowners prior to doing survey work on their land. Staff will again contact landowners prior to construction regarding property acquisition and temporary construction permits.

MDT said an important part of properly planning for future projects is partnering with the community, adding that the department welcomes the public to provide ideas and comments on the proposed project.
