Northstars battle at home jamboree

After tough battles with the Lewistown Redbirds last Tuesday, the Havre Northstars American Legion baseball club had a four-game weekend next on its schedule as part of the Havre Jamboree that went from Friday to Sunday at Legion Field. Havre was up for a big weekend full of action at home.

The Northstars started off the jamboree right with a 10-6 win over the Glendive Blue Devils Saturday evening, but then fell to the Gallatin Valley Outlaws 12-1 right after. Then Sunday, the Northstars fell to Glendive in a close 12-11 showdown, followed by a tough loss to the Miles City Mavericks, 11-1, finishing the weekend on a 1-3 record, with an overall record of 1-5 on the season.

Havre head coach Patch Wirtzberger recapped the jamboree that brought out both positives and negatives.

"We came out and played well against Glendive," Wirtzberger said. "We did some good things. Pitchers made strikes, and we made plays for the most part. Bats were hot there at the beginning, so that was a good start. Gallatin Valley was a good, experienced team all-around and we made some mistakes that made their job easier."

But before Havre took the field Saturday, the Havre Comets, or the B team, had some games at Legion themselves. The Comets fell to the Great Falls Outlaws twice Friday, 6-5 and 10-2, followed by a split Saturday, losing to Great Falls 15-0 and then beating Conrad 8-2.

In the first game against Great Falls, the Comets led 4-2 after the third inning, but then the Outlaws came back with a four-run sixth inning to win. In the next game of the Friday doubleheader, the Comets fell behind early to a Great Falls 10-run game in four innings unanswered. When Saturday came around, the Outlaws left no room for the Comets to breath, smashing them early on again in a 12-run first inning to seal the game. But luckily, Lane Kinsella had a four RBI game against Conrad in the 8-2 win to end the Comets' jamboree on a high note.

The Northstars put up a good fight to start the weekend against the Blue Devils Saturday, opening with a great five-run game in the first two innings, followed by a batting frenzy by Havre to add on five more runs to go up 10-3. Glendive pushed back with a three-run sixth, but the Northstars kept them back to get the win.

What followed would be a tough game against the Outlaws, with Gallatin Valley putting up an unanswered seven-run second inning to lead 7-1, then the Outlaws kept on striking out Havre and adding on runs to seal the deal early on.

Wirtzberger added that the team struggled Sunday, which was a lot harder day on the Northstars after the tough loss to Gallatin Valley the night before.

"Against Glendive again Sunday morning, we did our best at bat to battle back and got some real good innings out of our young kids there," Wirtzberger said. "Theron Peterson had a great game at the plate and in the field, scored some runs for us and got us back in the game. Tavish Mclean did a good job coming in there to pitch at the end. The last game against Miles City was a tough one. They're a good, experienced team that's going to hit the ball, so we you need to make a play - you have to do it - and we didn't do that all the time. Our at-bats weren't that good. This weekend was good experience, and we know how much we have to work on and far we have to go."

Sunday morning's rematch against the Blue Devils was a closer bout than its predecessor, with Havre exchanging the lead with Glendive multiple times, until the Blue Devils gained enough of an edge to lead 12-10 going into the seventh and even though the Northstars fought back in the final inning, the Glendive pitching did its work and struck out Havre to get revenge.

Then came the loss to Miles City afterward, where the Mavericks dominated in the first four innings to lead 11-0 for some time, until Ethan Carlson ran in from third base to give Havre its single score of the game. From there, Miles City kept throwing strikes and the Northstars could not get any more traction to put up more runs.

At the end of the weekend, there were some standouts for Havre. In the first game against Glendive, Julian Benson was the winning pitcher and both Carlson and Theron Peterson had perfect 2-for-2 outings, while in the second game against the Blue Devils, Peterson, Jeremiah Benson, Julian Benson, Tavish Mclean and Brody Nanini put up hits to help the Northstars fight back.

Havre is now 1-5 on the season, and will return to conference play Wednesday night when the Northstars host Great Falls for a doubleheader.
