Northstar veteran Carson Lunak excited to be back on the diamond with his Havre teammates, tonight

Havre hosts Great Falls in a Northern District double-dip

The Havre Northstars American Legion baseball club has been back in action and the community is eating it up. On top of that, another year of baseball, especially in such uncertain times such as these, means another year of watching athletes give it their all on the field.

And example of that kind of athlete is junior - soon-to-be-senior at HHS - Carson Lunak. Lunak is a lineman for the Havre High Blue Ponies football team and puts in hard work in the classroom, but when it comes to the summertime, baseball is another passion that Lunak enjoys.

The years have flown by for Lunak to the point where it feels like it has been a long time since he has started playing baseball, but he still knows that he has been in the sport for a good number of years.

"I think I started around my eighth grade year," Lunak said. "I don't know how long I've really played, but I believe I played in Babe Ruth for three years and I'm now in my second year playing for the Northstars."

Lunak has hopped around the field when it comes to playing different positions, but he recently has been seen at first base and at the pitcher's mound. Lunak puts in a lot of great work at the plate, as well, working to help the Northstars do their best.

Lunak has a big heart and a great knack for sports, too. He brightens the atmosphere in any situation and gives it his all every day. His hard work on the field translates off the field, as well, making him both an excellent player and a wonderful person to be around.

Lunak keeps it short, sweet and to the point when it comes to his favorite thing about the sport.

"I just love competing with my teammates, the atmosphere, being competitive and everything," Lunak said.

On top of that, when it comes to Lunak's character, Havre head coach Patch Wirtzberger knows that it is absolutely stellar.

"It starts off with him being a great kid," Wirtzberger said. "He's a good student in the classroom and puts in his work in the offseason, as well as playing multiple sports, so he's just a high-character person."

At the end of the day, Lunak is a great athlete and a wonderful person to be around. It does not matter where Lunak is because he will always make an impact. His smarts in the classroom, ability to make plays for the Northstars, willingness to learn new things and craving for experience have fueled the passion that is seen in the young man today.

Keep an eye out for Lunak tonight as the Northstars return to Legion Field to play the Great Falls Lightning in a Northern District doubleheader.

"I really don't know what to expect from them because they're kind of a new team in our district," Wirtzberger said. "I can't really give much about them, but it's more about what our guys go out and do. If they do the right things, they're going to have a good game."

The Northstars and Lightning meet tonight at 5 at Legion Field, as Havre looks to improve on its 1-5 start to the young season. First, however, the Havre Daily News News caught up with Lunak for five questions.

HDN: What is your favorite position to play on the field?

Lunak: "I like playing third base and pitcher. I really like pitching."

HDN: What are your goals this season?

Lunak: "My goals are to play together, to build a foundation for the younger kids, get to the district and state tournaments, and just compete."

HDN: How does it feel to be back on the field after the season looked to be canceled?

Lunak: "I was so hyped when I found out we were going to actually have a season. I'm just really excited to be playing this year and it almost wasn't that way. I'm just glad we get to play."

HDN: What are your hobbies outside of sports?

Lunak: "I love fly-fishing with my friends and golfing mostly."

HDN: What is your favorite memory with the Northstars?

Lunak: "Probably going to districts for the first time with last year's team. It was just really enjoyable and I got to watch good players like Kennedy McKay, Ethan Roberts, Quinn Reno and Tyrel Kjersem. They helped show me the right way to do things."
