For a second time in an outstanding career, Cody Donoven is stepping away from the North Star boys basketball program. Donoven announced his decision to step down as the boys basketball coach at North Star Tuesday night via his Facebook page.
"I ultimately just decided I just don't have the time to commit to them in the summer that is necessary to have a successful program and it's not fair to them if I can't give them the best chance to succeed. (The players) always have and always will come first," Donoven said.
Donoven has seen the best of times in boys basketball at North Star. As a player, he helped the Knights reach the Northern C Divisional in 2007. North Star didn't make it back to divisionals until 2018 when Donoven was an assistant coach for now Havre Blue Pony head man Walynn Burgess. As a player, Donoven was a two-time All Northern C standout for the Knights.
He also had two separate stints as head coach. He coached the Knights for a time before Burgess took over the program, and returned to the helm once Burgess left for Havre High at the end of the 2018 season. Donoven led the Knights in each of the past two seasons, including this past winter, where North Star was a strong contender during the District 9C's regular season, before falling out of the 9C boys tournament in the consolation semifinals back in February.
