Local Golf Report: Two golf tournaments on the slate

From Tee to Green

It’s going to be a big weekend on the local golf scene with big tournaments at both Prairie Farms Golf Course and Beaver Creek.

Sunday at Prairie Farms, the annual Rotary Blast will be held. The tournament is a two-person, modified stableford scoring tourney where points are added up instead of strokes. It’s a great tourney with a full 36-team field, and the course always plays especially difficult for the event.

Meanwhile, Saturday and Sunday, BCGC will host the Grip It and Rip It Tournament. The event is also a two-person team tourney with a Best Ball format Saturday and a Scramble Sunday. There will be a Calcutta, as well as pin prizes and deuce pots. For more information, contact the Pro Shop at BCGC.

On a personal note, I’d like to add that, while I won’t be playing in either tourney this weekend, I want to wish everybody the best of luck, and remind everybody to please be safe. I love that we’re able to have these tournaments still, and I don’t want to see golf get locked down again, so, be responsible and take care of each other, on and off the golf course.

Speaking of on the course, last week in men’s league at Prairie Farms, BA Ranch was high team Tuesday night with 22.5 points. The team was made up of Curt Leeds, Christian Oberquell, Ricky Brown and Chad Spangler. Jeremy Jensen was low gross with a sizzling 2-under par 34, while Mike Kellam was low net with a 33. Last Wednesday night saw Havre Ford take high-team honors with 20.5 points. Dr. Kevin Harada, who was also low gross with a great 35, as well as Dave Boles, Kerry Olson and Steve Steinmetz made up the squad. Dave Peterson was also low net with a 32.

There was no women’s league last Thursday due to the Fourth of July holiday, but there was men’s league at BCGC.

There was also the annual Fourth of July Tournament at Whitefish Lakes Golf Course last weekend. The tournament, also known as the Earl Hunt Memorial, is known as one of the best summer golf tournaments in the state, and several local players, and former locals were on hand.

Former Havre High standout Jason Johnstone was in the Championship Flight, which former Libby star and current Arizona State standout Ryggs Johnston won. More former Blue Ponies Troy Toner and Kyle Sheppard were on the second and third flights, respectively, while Dan Wagner played in the Senior field.

So, good job to everybody who played in the Whitefish tourney. I heard the greens were super fast, and we already know how tough those two courses play, so congrats to everybody for just teeing it up.
