VFW essay contest open to high school students

Havre’s VFW Post 497 is inviting students to enter the Veterans of Foreign Wars essay contest.

This year’s theme is “Is This the Country the Founders Envisioned?”

The deadline is Oct. 31, so students are invited to put their thoughts together, put on paper, and record their 3-5 minute essay on audio CD or flash drive and mail to Tom LaFond, 145 4th Ave. Suite 4, Havre, MT. 59501 or drop off at Tom LaFond State Farm office.

All entries must be postmarked by midnight, Oct. 31.

All grades 9-12 enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the U.S., territories, and possessions are eligible to enter. Information has been mailed to the county’s high schools but can also be found online by typing Veterans of Foreign Wars Essay Contest.

Judging criteria is based on originality: 30 points; content: 35 points; and delivery: 35 points.

The local winner receives a $300 scholarship to be delivered to college upon registration. If the student wins in multiple years, the scholarship compounds.

State level scholarship is $1,000 and all-expense paid trip to Washington to compete for a $30,000 scholarship.
