Blue Pony stampede on the Prairie

Havre High cross country teams race hard at Prairie Farms Golf Course

It had been a month of training, including in hot weather, all to finally get to the starting line of the 2020 season for the Havre High cross country teams and new head coach Kari Filius.

And when that day finally came, the Blue Ponies didn't disappoint.

The Ponies played host to their season-opening Havre Invitational Friday morning at Prairie Farms Golf Course, where the HHS girls placed second, and the Pony boys were fifth. The meet was in conjunction with the Frontier Conference Preview Meet, hosted by the Montana State University-Northern cross country teams, and, Filius was more than pleased with how it all went.

"It was really nice to compete and see what the kids could do," Filius said. "We have work to do, but I like what I saw today."

Havre raced against top competition, too, including the likes of standouts from Hardin, Lewistown and Browning. And when it was all said and done, the Ponies put up some outstanding times.

On the girls side, Sadie Filius led the way with a fifth-place finish in 21:26, while Emma Gillen placed 10th at 22:42 and Tamara O'Leary was 15th at 23:26. Hannah Haslem (16th), Maleigha Fuzesy and Chloe Shennum rounded out the race for the Havre girls, which took second to defending state champion Hardin.

The Havre boys would place fifth overall, led by Caleb Tomac's 12th-place finish in a time of 18:21. Veteran Dylan Young came in right behind Tomac in 13th with a time of 18:25, while Brody Henry was 25th, Ethan Durward was 29th and Zack May was 34th for the Ponies. Carter Spangler and Josh Currie rounded out the varsity lineup for the Ponies, who Filius was very proud of on the first day of an unusual, but highly anticipated regular season.

"Proud of all of them, varsity and junior varsity," she said.

The Ponies will be back in action next Friday at the Fergus Invitational in Lewistown.
