COVID-19 is certainly having an impact on high school sports of late, including local volleyball. However, plenty of big matches were still on the slate last week along the Hi-Line.
The Fort Benton Longhorns came into the week in first place in the District 7C standings, and after three wins, they're still undefeated.
Last Thursday, Fort Benton swept Big Sandy by scores of 25-14, 25-9 and 25-4 in Big Sandy. Abby Clark had a huge match with eight kills, three aces and three blocks. Alicia Bjornstad had two kills and five assists for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers also fell to DGS in a non-conference match last week. The Bearcats beat the Pioneers by scores of 25-11, 24-26, 25-16 and 25-9.
Saturday night was the big one for Fort Benton, though, as the Longhorns took on Chinook in a battle of the top two teams in the district. But the match was no contest as Fort Benton swept the Sugarbeeters by scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-23 to stay perfect in the 7C. Clark led the way again, with eight kills, three aces and two blocks. Delaney Kellam and Jayden Miller each had eight kills for the Beeters.
North Star also took care of Centerville Saturday night, as the Knights remained in third in the 7C. North Star beat the Miners by scores of 25-13, 25-9 and 25-10. Shayla Borlaug had 10 kills and Kenidee Wolery had 27 assists and five aces for the Knights.
Box Elder, Hays-Lodge Pole, Harlem and Rocky Boy also had matches postponed this past week due to COVID. Meanwhile, the schedule for area matches is light this week due to MEA week. There are just two weeks remaining in the regular season.
