Ponies race into state with the Eastern A Fall Classic in Lewistown

The Havre High cross country teams are headed to the Class A state meet this week in Kalispell. First, though, the Ponies had one final tuneup.

Last week, the Ponies were in Lewistown for the Eastern A Fall Classic, which essentially serves as the divisional meet for Class A cross country. Cross country doesn't have a qualifying meet as all teams and varsity runners compete in the state meet. Still the fall classic has become a big event on the Ponies’ schedule, and they did quite well in Lewistown.

The Havre girls placed fourth overall with senior Tamera O’Leary leading the charge with a 12th-place finish. Emma Gillen also placed 15th for the Ponies, giving both runners All-Conference honors. Loy Waid, Neveah Phillips, Chloe Shennum and Maleigha Fuzesy rounded out the Havre varsity lineup.

On the boys side, the Ponies took sixth place with Caleb Tomac finishing 14th overall. Dylan Young also ran to an 18th-place finish, while Riley Pleninger, Brody Henry, Ethan Durward and Kendall Pleninger completed Havre’s varsity lineup.

“Almost everyone that ran improved their time from running the same course earlier in the season,” Kari Filius said. “It is good to see we are still improving week to week. We’re hoping for our best performances next week. I had a few runners that didn't run, for different reasons, in hopes to be able to run at state next week.”

Havre will race in the Class A State Meet Friday in Kalispell.
