Kaleb Frank, MSU-N wrestlng honored by the CCC

Opening weekend was big for the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team. It was for sophomore Kaleb Frank, too.

Wrestling at 125 pounds, Frank, from Thompson Falls, went 3-0 with a pin and two decisions for the No. 15 Lights, who were perfect in four matches at the Bulldog Duals in Concordia, Nebraska, Saturday. For his efforts, Frank was named Cascade Conference Wrestler of the Week.

Northern, which beat Morningside, No. 13 Doane, Concordia and Oklahoma Wesleyan was also named CCC Team of the Week, as the Lights had six wrestlers in all go undefeated.

The other Lights to go undefeated were: 133, Nick Kunz, 2-0; 149, Connor Harris, 1-0; 184, Carl Hansen, 2-0; 197, Isaac Bartel, 4-0; and 285, Rylan Moldenhauer, 2-0.

The CCC also announced on Monday that the 2021 Cascade Wrestling Championships have been cancelled. The event was supposed to be held at MSU-Northern in February. Northern will hold the event next season inside the Armory Gymnasium.

"With our large wrestling footprint covering Arizona, California, Oregon and Montana, the prospect of successfully getting all teams to tournaments during a time when the COVID-19 pandemic is surging seemed very unrealistic and not in the best interests of health and safety,” stated CCC Commissioner Robert Cashell ina press release. “The NAIA has changed the qualification process for men's wrestling for the 2021 national championship, which has afforded conferences the ability to identify representatives in an alternative manner.”

The NAIA National Championship for men is scheduled for March 5-6 in Park City, Kansas. The women's invitational is scheduled for March 12-13 in Jamestown, North Dakota.
