HHS grapplers sweep Scotties, Red Devils

Blue Ponies sharp on the mat Friday night in Glasgow

The Havre High wrestling team went to Glasgow to face off a pair of squads that are predicted to be very good on the mat this winter. And yet, the Blue Ponies showed how good they are.

Friday afternoon, Havre took down Glasgow and Glendive in a pair of duals at the Glasgow Gymnasium. The wins were Havre’s first of the season.

The Ponies, of head coach Beau LaSalle, started the afternoon with a 36-33 win over the Scotties, the top-ranked team in Class B-C. The dual was close throughout, but Havre got a pin by Mick Chagnon at 126 pounds, another pin by Riley Pleninger at 138 and another fall by Orion Thivierge at 170. Those bonus points were big, but, a 6-4 win by Kendall Pleninger at 145, and another 6-4 decision by Kale VanCampen also proved to the be the difference in the match. Havre also picked up forfeits with Braden Knowles at 120 and Hunter Velk at 132.

After the win over Glasgow, the Ponies took on Eastern A rival Gleindive, and they dominated the Red Devils 48-24.

Knowles started off with a pin at 120, and Chagnon came away with a fall of his own at 126. Velk, a senior, then won by fall at 132, while VanCampen (160) and Thivierge (170) also picked up wins by fall. Jerry Kirkaldie, Mason Wilting and Randy Tommerup picked up wins by forfeit for the Ponies, who improved to 2-1 in duals.

Havre will now get ready for its long-awaited home debut. The Ponies will wrestle Class A heavyweight Lewistown, as well as Hardin this Saturday in the HHS gymnasium.
