Home games early in the week weren't easy for the somewhat inexperienced Montana State University-Northern Lights. They found out life on the road in the Frontier Conference is tough, too.
But on their first road trip of the new season, the Lights learned how to battle adversity. After falling to Montana Western Saturday night, Northern bounced right back and beat the Bulldogs 69-55 Sunday afternoon for an important split in Dillon.
The Lights looked to be against the ropes early on, much like they were Saturday night. Despite leading 25-22 at intermission, MSU-N quickly fell behind in the second half. But, a critical 3-pointer by Mascio McCadney and a driving layup from C.J. Nelson helped spark an 11-0 Northern run. Ultimately, the Lights would lead by as many as 19 points and cruise home to their first win in Frontier play.
McCadney would finish with 15 points, while David Harris scored 19 points and Jomel Boyd added 11 points and eight rebounds for a Lights squad that shot a stellar 51 percent from the floor, all the while recovering from a tough loss one night earlier.
Saturday night, the Lights saw the upstart Dawgs pull away in an 89-73 loss. The Lights kept things close in a high-scoring first half in which they trailed just 47-41. But as the second half went on, Western methodically increased its lead as Western shot an incredible 64 percent from the field and 47 percent from beyond the arc, led by a game-high 25 points by Jalen Hodges.
Northern was paced by 22 points from David Harris, while Mascio McCadney scored 16 and Jomel Boyd added 11.
"Just really proud of our guys," Northern head coach Shawn Huse said. "They showed a lot of character with how they came back on Sunday."
With the road split, the Lights are now 1-3 in the Frontier and 2-4 overall. MSU-N returns to the Armory to host Montana Tech this Saturday and Sunday.
