Pony girls trample the Cowgirls in the Corral

Over the last four years, the Havre Blue Ponies and the Hardin Bulldogs have played some epic girls basketball games against one another, including meeting in back-to-back state championship games.

And while the latest meeting was an early-season contest, it had all the makings of another classic in the rivalry, only this time Hardin turned the tables on the Ponies.

Havre had bested the Bulldogs for both the 2018 and 2019 state championships, but Hardin got some payback Saturday when the Bulldogs toppled the Ponies 41-38 inside the Havre High gymnasium.

Hardin upset Havre in the waning seconds, too. The Bulldogs took the lead with 1:15 left to go, then got a steal with :23 while Havre was looking for the go-ahead score. Instead, Hardin took the turnover to the other end, scored on a layup to go up by three, then held on as Havre missed a game-tying 3-pointer at the end.

The final minutes were part of an exciting game in which the Blue Ponies led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter, added an 8-0 run in the second, only to watch the Bulldogs storm back to make it a 17-16 game at halftime.

The third quarter remained just as close. The Bulldogs went ahead at 19-17 and again at 23-21, but sparked by a Sadie Filius triple, Havre started what would be a 10-0 run that would carry over into the final stanza, where the Ponies led by as many as eight points at 38-30 with 5:40 to play. From there, though, Hardin fought its way back into the game, and ultimately overtook Havre for good on a big shot by Kylee Old Elk.

In Havre's first loss of the season, Loy Waid and Yelena Miller each scored 11 points for the Ponies, while Sadie Filius had nine.

The loss to Hardin was a tough one, but the Ponies started the weekend off with a Northeast A thrashing of Miles City Friday night in the Blue Pony Corral.

Havre shut out the Cowgirls 15-0 in the first period, led 31-4 at halftime, and went on to win 66-8 to improve to 2-0 in conference play.

The Blue Ponies (2-1) will now hit the road for the first time this season when they travel to Browning Thursday night. Havre also hosts Sidney this Friday.
