Roberts wins Sunnyside spelling bee, goes on to online state bee

County bee canceled due to pandemic

Fifth grader Keyon Roberts won Sunnyside Intermediate School's annual spelling bee Tuesday afternoon on the word "fanged" and will be registered for an online intermediate spelling bee and the winners of that will advance to the the Montana State Spelling Bee.

The online intermediate bee replaces the Hill County Spelling Bee, canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In previous years, students who won their school bees would advance to the county bee, with the winner of that advancing to the state spelling bee.

The winners of the state bees would then advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington., D.C.

Hill County Superintendent of Schools Lorren Schlotfeldt said the decision to cancel the county bee was made in December.

"They just thought, with students coming in from all different schools all over the county, there was just no way to keep it safe, so Hill County Spelling Bee has been cancelled," Schlotfeldt said.
