Hi-Line Boys Basketball Roundup
High School boys basketball on the Hi-Line is already about to begin its second month. But, plenty of teams ended January on a high note.
Last Tuesday night saw Fort Benton continue its winning ways with a 71-29 win over Big Sandy. The game was a rematch of last year's Northern C championship, but, this time around, the Pioneers just didn't match up well, as Fort Benton started the game on an 18-5 and never looked back.
For Benton had 13 players reach the box score with Hayden Diekhans scoring 19 points, Devin Bird adding 15 and Jace Thompson putting up 10. Brayden Cline scored nine for the Pioneers.
Meanwhile, Tuesday night also saw Hays-Lodge Pole's game with Roy-Winifred canceled, as was Box Elder's home game with Harlem. Thursday's Class B rivalry game between Harlem and Rocky Boy was also called off.
A busy night in the 9C Friday included a thrilling game where the Big Sandy Pioneers knocked off Chester-Joplin-Inverness 58-57. The Pioneers 41-35 after three quarters and were still behind early in the fourth, but, they went on a huge run to win in the end.
Kody Strutz and Lane Demontiney each scored 15 points for Big Sandy, while Kyle and Blake Harmon combined for 25 points for the Hawks.
Friday night also saw the Box Elder Bears thump Turner 94-67. The Bears were on fire offensively, scoring 48 points in the first half. Turner did keep up early, trailing just 48-41 any halftime. From there though, Box Elder outscored the Tornadoes 26-26.
Malique Rosette scored 25 points, while Gabe Saddler added 19 and Jayden Jillot scored 17 for the Bears. Shane Kimmel poured in a game-high 29 points for Turner, while Austin Welch chipped in with 23.
Friday was not kind to North Star either, as the Knights were crushed by top-ranked Fort Benton, 59-19. The Longhorns remained undefeated in 9C play with 18 points from Hayden Diekhans and 16 by Devin Bird. Garrett Spicher led the Knights with 13 points.
Rocky Boy got back to its winning ways Friday night, as the Stars edged Malta 46-43 in a defensive slugfest.
Harlem's game with Cut Bank was cancelled Friday night, as was the 9C game between Chinook and Hays-Lodge Pole.
In Saturday night's action, Chinook got back on the court and took care of the Big Sandy Pioneers, 69-42. Big Sandy took an early 17-12 lead over the rival Beeters, but, Chinook went on a 20-5 run in the second stanza and never trailed again. Ethan MacLeod scored 14 points while Benton Elliot added 13 for the Beeters. Lane Demontiney paced Big Sandy with a game-high 15 points.
Saturday night also saw CJI grab a big 9C win, beating Turner 58-46. The Hawks led 29-19 at halftime and added an 18-10 run in the third quarter to pull away. Blake Harmon scored a game-high 21 points and Kyle Harmon added 14 for CJI, while Shane Killed scored 21 and Austin Welch added 16 for the Tornadoes.
Box Elder was also victorious in the 9C Saturday as the Bears downed North Star 63-54. Jayden Jillot led four Bears in double figures with 20 points, while Tyrus LaMere added 15, Gabe Saddler scored 13 and Malique Rosette chipped in with 11. Payne Ditmar and Gavin Spicher scored 13 points each for the Knights.
Top-ranked Fort Benton's game with HLP was cancelled due to COVID Saturday night, while no score from Rocky Boy's game against Cut bank was reported.
