Harlem, Rocky Boy hoops teams advance

Hi-Line basketball had a busy weekend with postseason tournaments. The Harlem boys and girls basketball teams experienced some success in their District 2B Basketball Tournaments. In the District 1B Basketball Tournaments, the Rocky Boy boys basketball team also experienced some success while the Rocky Boy girls basketball team fell short.

The Harlem boys team started tournament play in Wolf Point with a 61-60 loss to Glasgow Thursday. Harlem held a 19-15 lead after the first quarter but Glasgow came back to take the lead by halftime. Harlem fought back to make it a one-point game in the game’s final moments but they could not break through to secure the victory. In a losing effort for the Wildcats, Jehton Longfox scored 18 points and Tyler Cichosz put 14 on the scoreboard.

The Wildcats bounced back Friday with a 72-55 win over Poplar in a loser-out game. Harlem exploded on offense in the first quarter as they took a 20-9 lead that they would not let go. Leading the Wildcats’ offense was Trent Main with 14 points, Cichosz with 12 points and Longfox with 10 points.

Saturday, Harlem defeated Wolf Point, 73-66, to win the District 1B Tournament consolation trophy. It was a tight game throughout as Harlem had a lead heading to the fourth quarter. Both teams exploded on offense in the fourth quarter but Harlem held on to win the consolation.

The Harlem girls basketball team started District 2B tournament play in Poplar Thursday with a 58-49 victory over the hosting school. Harlem trailed by two at halftime but they outscored Poplar 33-24 in the second half to win the game. Taya Trottier scored 15 points to lead Harlem while Ma’Lea Moore and Alaynee Hawley chipped in 13 points for the Wildcats.

Friday, Harlem suffered a 59-30 loss to Malta. It was a game that saw the Wildcats fall behind quickly as Malta had a 29-16 lead at halftime. No Wildcat reached double digits in scoring as Trottier led the team with eight points.

In the consolation game Saturday, Harlem responded with a 40-37 victory over Wolf Point. Trottier again led the Wildcats in scoring as she had 17 points on the night. Hawley also scored 10 points to aid the winning effort.

The Rocky Boy boys basketball team opened play in the District 1B Basketball Tournament with a 65-38 victory over Great Falls Central Wednesday. The Stars took control of the game early as they led 22-5 at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Rocky Boy’s leading scorers were Sean Gibson with 14 points and Ben Crebs with 11 points.

Rocky Boy then suffered a 79-53 loss to Shelby Thursday. Rocky Boy kept the game close in the first half as they trailed 37-30 at halftime. However, back-to-back 21-point quarters from Shelby put the game away. Crebs led the Stars with 16 points and Teague Stump chipped in 11 in the losing effort.

Rocky Boy bounced back with a 73-46 victory over Cut Bank in a loser-out game Friday. After a competitive first quarter that ended with the game tied at 16, Rocky Boy went on a 57-30 run over the next three quarters to take the game.

Saturday, Rocky Boy defeated Conrad, 58-52, to win the District 1B consolation trophy. The Stars took quick control of the game as they led 17-4 at the end of the first quarter. Conrad went on a run in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to single digits but Rocky Boy held on. Joe Demontiney led the Stars with 23 points and Crebs was second on the team with 15.

The Rocky Boy girls basketball team opened up tournament play with a 61-45 loss to Choteau Wednesday to open tournament play. The Stars looked to rebound Thursday in a loser-out game against Conrad, but they lost 73-48. In their game against Conrad, Kirsten LaMere scored 19 points and Jayci Demontiney chipped in 11 points in the loss.

All 1B and 2B teams that qualified will play the Northern B this week. The Northern B girls tournament is in Wolf Point, while the Northern B boys tourney is in Cut Bank.
