Havre High thinclads score big in Cut Bank

Blue Ponies begin long-awaited track season with plenty of success

It had been a long two years for the Havre High track and field team, but Saturday, they finally got to compete again after their 2020 season was shut down by COVID-19. NEW HHS head coach Ryan Gatch demonstrated a variety of feelings over finally getting back on the track.

"Fantastic, awesome, exhilarating, great," Gatch said. "No other way to describe it but simply awesome."

The Blue Ponies took little time getting adjusted after the layoff as they finished second in both girls and boys varsity. The girls team scored 71.5 points to finish second behind Conrad, who scored 110.5 points. The boys team scored 111 behind Cut Bank with 134 points. There were 11 teams competing at the meet, so Havre had to perform their best to rise above the others.

"Fantastic effort by everybody. It was a lot of fun to watch them go out and compete," Gatch said. "A lot of smiles and laughs from the coaching staff, a lot of smiles and laughs from the athletes. It was a great experience."

On the boys team, senior Nolan Lotton had a strong day to start the season. The highlight of the day was a first-place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 23.7 seconds. He also finished second in the 100 with a time of 11.61 seconds.

Senior Bradyn Winchell started his final season strong with a first-place finish in the javelin event with a distance of 128 feet and 5.5 inches. He also finished fourth in the discus event with a distance of 88 feet and 4.5 inches.

The last senior to win an event for the boys team was Eli Cloninger, who took first in the triple jump with a distance of 38 feet and 5.25 inches. He also finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 18 feet and 3.5 inches.

The girls team also had success Saturday. Sadie Filius started her season on the right note with a first-place finish in the 300 hurdles with a time of 52.17 seconds. She also tied for fourth in the 100 with a time of 14.36 seconds.

Freshman Kyanna Jarvis kicked off her career at Havre High with a bang as she took first in the 110 meter hurdles at 33 inches as she recorded a time of 18.33 seconds. She also won the high jump with a score of four feet and eight inches.

Several Ponies had success in the boys 800 meters. Senior Dylan Young finished second in the event with a time of 2:18.34 and right behind him in third was junior Hunter Awtrey with a time of 2:18.97. Sophomore Brody Henry recorded a time of 2:20.34 to finish fifth in the event. Young and Henry also had success in the 1,600 meters as Young earned second with a time of 5:08.33 and Henry placed fourth with a time of 5:13.31.

The Ponies also gained points in smaller competitions such as the boys 110 meter hurdles. Out of five competitors, HHS freshman Jacob Herring finished second with a 20.19. Herring finished fifth in the 300 meter hurdles at 36 inches with a time of 50.28 seconds. Junior Carter Nystrom finished fifth in the boys discus event with a distance of 87 feet and 3.5 inches.

Senior Kennedy Hampton finished fourth in the girls long jump with a distance of 14 feet one inch. Junior Emma Gillen finished third in the girls 110 meter hurdle with a time of 19.57 seconds. Freshman Maggie Daniels finished third in the girls shot put with a distance of 26 feet and five inches. She also placed fourth in the discus event with a distance of 57 feet and 6.5 inches.

The Ponies will have a quick turnaround for their next meet, which will be in Glasgow this Thursday. As they move forward with the rest of their season, Gatch wants his athletes to remember the hard work they had already put in this past weekend.

"Our athletes did a great job competing," Gatch said. "Got their mind right there and went out and competed real hard and it was fantastic to see."

Chinook also competed in the meet, as did CJI and Harlem.

HHS will next hit the track at 9 a.m. this Thursday in Glasgow.
