McGuire joins Havre Daily as new reporter

Dane McGuire has joined Havre Daily News as a new reporter.

McGuire came to Havre from Jerseyville, Illinois, where he grew up, because this job had everything he was looking for, he said.

His immediate family is in Jerseyville and were supportive of his journey to Montana despite the big adjustment, McGuire said.

"They knew I was getting very anxious because I graduated in 2020 and didn't have work until I came to Havre," he said. "I am right where I need to be, and I got a text message from my dad saying as much this morning before I came to work."

McGuire earned in 2015 an Associate of Applied Science in radio broadcasting from Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey Illinois and a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from Webster University in St. Louis in 2020. For most of his career he has focused his reporting on combat sports such as mixed martial arts. He is also a freelance writer with previous clients in London, New York, Australia, and Israel.

Fitness is more than a passion for McGuire, it is a lifestyle. He discovered his love for fitness after a struggle with his mental health. It reinvigorated all aspects of his life, he said. He runs virtual Ironman races and has found local places to pursue his passion.

Being so passionate about fitness and following his love of it is truly inspiring to those around McGuire. It is even more so impressive because he has lived his life with minor spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy. This causes his right side of his body to be weak and as he says, "pretty darn close to useless."

McGuire was born with this condition after his mother was involved in a car crash while pregnant with him. The crash caused him to be born three months early, but, more importantly, both McGuire and his mother survived the incident.

He did participate in Special Olympics for three years growing up; however, he left the competition because he felt the medals he won were not earned after being given a first-place award simply because his competitor did not show up.

McGuire has played an adaptive form of hockey called sled hockey and is excited about Havre's hockey community. He is excited to get to know the area and find new interests in Havre and the surrounding areas.

Videogames, such as EA Sport's NHL and Batman series and reading to expand his knowledge through audio books are a few of McGuire's other favorite pass times. He also blogs and interviews MMA fighters on top of his new full-time job.
