Pony thinclads make more strides at Sidney Invite

The Havre High track and field teams hit the halfway point of their regular season Saturday as they competed at the Sidney Invitational. With only three weeks left before postseason competition, HHS head coach Ryan Gatch wants his team to continue improving. He believes he saw improvement at Sidney as his girls team finished tied for third and the boys team finished seventh.

“Really pleased with our performance,” Gatch said. “Made a lot of really good strides today and had fantastic performances.”

Out of 17 teams, the Pony girls team tied for third with Sidney as they scored 46 points. Lewistown finished first with 79 points and Plentywood finished second. The HHS boys team scored 33 points to take seventh at the meet. Glendive took first with 86 points.

The Havre girls team had another strong outing at the meet. The 4x400 relay team consisting of Sadie Filius, Kyanna Jarvis, Loy Waid and Tamera O’Leary won the event with a time of 4:19.96. The 4x100 relay team of Filius, O’Leary, Waid and Kennedy Hampton also had a strong showing as they took second with a time of 52.82, less than half a second behind Lewistown.

The girls team also saw many individuals have strong outings. Filius finished second in the 300-meter hurdle with a time of 48.92, making it five straight meets this season that she has finished in the top two of the event. She also won the long jump for the first time this season with a distance 15-11. Filius also finished second in the 200-meter sprint and 100 hurdles. O’Leary had a strong finish in the 100 with a time of 13.68 to take third.

On the boys side, Nolan Lotton showcased his talents again with another strong outing. He won the 100 for the fourth straight meet with a time of 11.42 and he won the 200 for the fifth time this season with a time of 23.54.

Dylan Young also had a strong showing for the Ponies. He placed third in the 1,600 with the time of 4:50.53 and he took fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:07.

“We did well in a lot of stuff,” Gatch said. “Be able to go down and compete at a high level and to watch all of our athletes go out and have a very good showing was fantastic to see.”

The Ponies have a quick turnaround as they compete in the Cal Wearley Memorial meet this Tuesday at the Havre Middle School Track. It will be their first out of four meets within the next two weeks, so Gatch will use the short time to continue to help his athletes improve.

“What we’re figuring out right now, we’re in the part where we’re devising plans to score multiple points in our conference tournament,” Gatch said. “It’s definitely a learning and growing experience for our kids and they keep continuing to impress me and get better every day we go out and compete.”

The Havre track and field team will next compete in the Cal Wearley Memorial meet this Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. at Havre Middle School.
