Pony tracksters post solid finishes Elk's Invite

With the postseason approaching in three weeks, the Havre High track and field team will be looking to be performing at their best by then. They had another opportunity to continue improving this Saturday when they competed at the Glendive Elks Invitational. Thanks to several strong individual performances from the Blue Ponies, the Havre girl’s team finished third and the Havre boy’s team finished fifth.

“We had a few kids that had really gritty performances that were really good,” said HHS head coach Ryan Gatch. “Our kids have gone out and still continued to not only just contribute but to get better and better at each of their events.”

The Havre girl’s team scored 58 points to tie for third with Glendive. Lewistown won the girl’s meet with a score of 102 points. The Havre boy’s team tied for fifth with Miles City as both teams scored 33 points. Hardin finished first in the boy’s meet with a score of 117 points.

The Havre girl’s relay team continued their strong season with another strong performance in Glendive. The team of Sadie Filius, Kyanna Jarvis, Loy Waid and Tamera O’Leary won the 1,600 relay with a time of 4:16.47. The team of Filius, O’Leary, Waid and Kennedy Hampton finished second in the 400 relay with a time of 51.90 just a second behind winner Billings Central.

“Kyanna was able to shave time, Sadie was able to run a real strong anchor leg and Tamera and Loy were war horses,” Gatch said about the 1,600 relay.

“Our goal for our relays is to compete for that conference championship and then go compete for the divisional championship and that will put us in position to compete for the state championship.”

The Blue Ponies also had many strong individual performances Saturday. Nolan Lotton won the 100-meter sprint for the sixth time this season with a time of 11.18, his personal best this season. He also achieved a personal best when he won the 200 with a time of 22.67.

“Nolan’s having a great year. We’re looking forward to him finishing strong,” Gatch said. “Real enjoyable athlete to coach, real fun to have on the team. What else can you say about the kid, he’s having an awesome year.”

Other Ponies had strong finishes at the meet. Jarvis took second in the high jump with a height of 4-10.00. She also placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdle with a time of 17.53. Hampton also recorded a second-place finish when she took second in the long jump with a distance of 16-02.00.

Waid took third in the triple jump with a distance of 31-04.50 and she finished sixth in the 100 with a time of 13.50. Hannah Haslem took third in the 3,200 with a time of 13:50.38. Emma Gillen had a solid day for the Ponies as she took fourth in the 300-meter hurdle with a time of 54.85 and finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdle with a time of 18.07.

One Pony that was missing from the individual events was Filius, who was having a strong season in the hurdles and the long jump. She has been dealing with a nagging leg injury, so Gatch kept her out of some events so she will be healthy for the postseason.

“That hurt the team points and she was a little mad at me because she wasn’t going but we want to err on the side of caution this close to the postseason,” Gatch said.

The Ponies also had some good finishes on their boy’s team as well. Dylan Young took fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:12.36. Caleb Tomac also had a solid day as he finished fifth in the 3,200 with a time of 11:05.67 and sixth in the 1,600 with a time of 5:04.38.

The Ponies competed against several Eastern A opponents at the Glendive Elk’s Invitational such as Lewistown, Miles City and Glendive. After competing against these teams on Saturday, Gatch is confident that his teams can hold their own against their future postseason opponents.

“Our women’s team matches up real good. Our guy’s team showed marked improvement,” Gatch said. “We scored points in areas where we haven’t scored points. That just goes to show that we’re getting better.”

Gatch also believes his team is becoming more mentally prepared. After his athletes made mental errors in their meet at Sidney in April, he noticed improvement at Glendive. He believes these improvements will prove beneficial in the final weeks of the season.

“Our students did a lot better job of preparing mentally. Physiologically they’re ready to go. They’re competing at a high level. Mentally, they’re dialed in,” Gatch said. “We’re going to continue to grow and get better.”

Havre will next compete in the top 10 meet in Glasgow on Tuesday.
