Area athletes shine at North/East Top 10 in Glasgow

Most of the athletes on the Havre High track and field team got the day off Tuesday. However, their top athletes saw no such rest as they competed in the North/East Top 10 meet in Glasgow where they competed against the best athletes in the region.

Despite facing the toughest competition in the region, Havre saw many of its athletes stand out.

“We had a lot of really strong performances from everybody that came,” said HHS head coach Ryan Gatch. “A lot of people were wearing medals today and they’ve been earning them all year.”

Nolan Lotton had the most productive day for the Blue Ponies as he placed first in two events. He won the 200-meter sprint with a time of 22.62 and he took first in the 400 with a finish of 50.89. Dylan Young took second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:47.86 behind Richey-Lambert’s Samuel Smith. In the 800, Hunter Awtrey took fifth with a time of 2:10 and Brody Henry finished sixth with a time of 2:11.35. Caleb Tomac represented Havre in the 3,200, where he took sixth with a time of 10:59.87.

Havre also had many strong performances on their girl’s team. Kennedy Hampton had the best finish in an individual event for the Ponies as she took third in the long jump with a score of 15-10.00. Tamera O’Leary also placed third in the 100 with a time of 13.35.

Loy Waid continued her strong season as she took fourth in the 400 with a time of 1:02.17. In the 100-meter hurdles, Emma Gillen took fifth with a time of 17.55 and Kyanna Jarvis recorded a time of 17.57 to take sixth. Gillen also finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdle with a time of 55.37.

The Havre relay teams also had some success on Tuesday. The girl’s 400 relay team took second with a time of 52.61, less than half a second behind event winner Baker. The boys 400 relay team placed fifth with a time of 46.82.

Gatch believes that his athletes’ performances in this meet demonstrated the improvement they have made this season. Not only does he want them peaking right in time for the postseason, but he wants them to be healthy as well.

“We’re progressing real good,” Gatch said. “We’re seeing a lot of gutsy performances. We’re getting people healthy.”

Other schools from the Hi-Line also had their top athletes compete at the meet. Chinook’s Toby Niederegger took first in the high jump with a score of 6-00.00. Brenden Fetter of Chinook also had a good showing in the 200 where he finished third with a time of 23.67. The Chinook boy’s 400 relay team also finished second behind Sidney with a time of 45.91.

The Chinook girl’s team also saw success in individual events. In the 400, Hallie Neibauer took third with a time of 1:01.44. Anna Terry also performed well as she took fifth in the 1,600 with a time of 5:50.73 and fifth in the 3,200 with a finish of 12:49.89. Kinley Hamilton placed high in the shot put as she finished fourth with a score of 34-08.50.

Harlem also saw several athletes place high at the meet. Taya Trottier took fourth in the girl’s 1,600 with a time of 5:44.36 and Kaitlyn Johnson finished fourth in the girl’s 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.38. On the boy’s team, Andrew Rasmussen and Amari Stanley also had strong finishes. Rasmussen took fifth in the 100 with a time of 11.84 and he finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 18-02.00. Stanley took sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 38-06.00.

The Ponies now only have two meets left before postseason competition begins in a few weeks. In these last few meets, Gatch hopes that his athletes will continue not only to improve, but also to learn how to manage these fast-paced late-season meets like the North/East Top 10 meet.

“It’s a fast, fun meet,” Gatch said. “It gave these students a taste of a quickly run meet because we got less events. It’s high quality, high caliber athletes in each one.”

The HHS track and field team will next compete in the Havre Invite at Havre Middle School Saturday begining at 11 a.m.
