Longhorns continue 9C title streak

The Fort Benton girl's track and field team came into the District 9C meet missing some of their best athletes. However, the Longhorns stepped up at Havre Middle School Wednesday to open the postseason with a first-place finish to win the 9C.

"We threw some young kids in and the young kids did really well, so, really proud of them and of course we have some really good senior leaders," Fort Benton head coach Kevin Shaw said. "Our goal is to qualify as many as we can and then go to divisionals and see what we can do. Hopefully we can come away with a trophy or two and get a lot of kids to state."

Fort Benton scored 153 points to take first at the meet thanks to several dominant performances. Abby Clark had a strong day in the hurdles winning the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.87 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles with a finish of 48.70 seconds. She also won the high jump with a height of 5-00.

"I'm really proud of my performance. I definitely wanted to make my last district meet one to be proud of," Clark said. "I'm hoping that I don't peak at districts and I want to keep improving till state."

Aspen Giese also had a strong day for the Longhorns to help them win the meet. She won the 200-meter sprint with a time of 27.65 seconds and she took first in the 400 with a finish of 1:00.28. She also placed first in the long jump with a distance of 16-06.50.

The Longhorns had success in the throwing events as well. Cloe Kalanick took first in the shot put with a distance of 34-06 and Maci Molinario won the javelin with a distance of 114-05. Fort Benton's relay teams dominated the day as their 400 relay team took first with a time of 53.80 seconds and their 1,600 relay team finished first with a time of 4:34.80.

Big Sandy finished second with 96 points. Eva Wagoner gave the Pioneers a win in the 100 with a time of 13.36 seconds.

Chinook took third at the meet with 83 points. Anna Terry finished first in the 1,600 with a time of 5:57.60 and she won the 3,200 with a time of 13:15.80. Jayden Miller gave Chinook a win in the discus with a distance of 105.08.

North Star took fourth with 81 points. Laynie Sattoriva had the strongest day for the Knights winning three events. She took first in the 800 with a time of 2:30.90 and won the pole vault with a score of 16-06.50. She then won the triple jump with a distance of 29-07.

"It's been really good, especially for districts when you got to be at the top," Sattoriva said about her performance. "You got to be peaking right about now and I think I'm doing that."

Chester-Joplin-Inverness finished fifth at the meet with 37 points. Turner scored 32 to take sixth and Box Elder finished seventh with 26 points. Hays-Lodge Pole finished eighth with two points.

The top athletes will now advance to the Northern C Divisional next week in Great Falls. Shaw believes that now his girls have more time to practice over the next week, they will perform even better the rest of the postseason.

"We're a little rusty so pretty excited about having a week of practice before divisionals," Shaw said. "They're looking forward to improving a little bit between now and next Wednesday."

The Northern C Divisional will be held on May 19-20 at Memorial Stadium in Great Falls.
