Celebrating National Garden Club Week in Havre

From Bullhook Blossoms Garden Club

National Garden Clubs Inc. and Bullhook Blossoms Garden Club of Havre are celebrating the organization's objectives of beautification, education of environmental efforts and involvement of our club in the Havre Area.

June 6-12, 2021, is our declared National Garden Club Week. We would like to emphasize adding beauty, splendor fragrance and nutrition to people's lives by growing flowers, vegetables, herbs, foliage plants and flowers.

We consider all creatures, large and small, that share the world with us humans to be important in their roles also balancing ecology. Gardening is a constructive way to get fresh air, exercise and a stress-reducer in our lives. Rewards do come from diligent efforts on each person's part in working in our own yards and public places to make our communities more beautiful and productive.

Some fun projects our local club has been involved in currently and in the recent past have been working with other civic-minded organizations in our area on the Blue Star Memorial and ByWay Markers in Havre; a memorial sundial and native plant area coming up at Montana State University-Northern for Toni Hagener and her husband; working with the Boys & Girls Club in Havre, helping them plant their raised-bed vegetable gardens in the former school playground area to the west of their current building and we enter a tree or other item to auction off in their annual November fundraiser event; we help when asked by the Havre Art Association at their art in the garden summer tour; we help the local school children when they do Arbor Day planting most years; and we volunteer with the parks in the adopt-a-park program in the Havre area with litter removal and flower planting as needed.

We groom and deadhead peony bushes at the Hill County Courthouse each spring and plant flowers at the Havre-Hill County Library entrance planter.

We do a featured yards program with Havre Daily News with yards in the Havre and surrounding areas. We consider the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line to be our junior gardeners, and ejnoy working with them on any planting projects they wish to undertake.

We have lessons with and at the Northern Agricultural Experiment Station southwest of Havre on occasion.

We have a lot of fun working together in our club to make the world around us a better place to live. Please consider joining us as a member of our Bullhook Blossoms Garden Club. You do not have to be a plant expert; we just all grow together in knowledge about nature things and how to place them in beautiful designs.

Contact Cheryl Kuka at 406-262-4227 if you would like to visit a meeting and consider joining our organization We meet the fourth Tuesday of each month at 2 p.m. in the Timmons Room in the basement of the Hill County Courthouse.
