Joelnell Momberg to play at Western

One of the stars of a pair of state championship Box Elder squads will shine in the Frontier Conference starting this fall.

Former Box Elder standout Joelnell Momberg recently announced her decision to transfer from the University of Montana to Montana Western in Dillon. Momberg, a 5-foot-8 guard, spent the past year with the Montana Lady Griz. She still has four years of eligibility because the NCAA granted all student-athletes a "free year" last season. Momberg played in 10 games for the Lady Griz last season,

"We are excited to add Joelnell to our family," Western head coach Lindsay Woolley said in a press release. "She is an elite shooter who has a tremendous work ethic and a very high basketball IQ. Bulldog fans will enjoy watching her for the next four years, and I can't wait to coach her."

Momberg will join former Box Elder teammate Lilly Gopher at Western, which won the 2019 NAIA national championship. At Box Elder, Momberg was a three-year starter, and Class C All-Stater for her father Joel. She helped the Bears win back-to-back Class C state championships, and in her junior year, she averaged 21 points per game on her way to State Tournament MVP honors. Momberg then moved to Spokane for her senior season where she was First-Team All-Conference for Mead High School in the Greater Spokane League.

Momberg had committed to the Lady Griz and then head coach Shannon Schweyen after her sophomore season at Box Elder. She played her freshman year for interim head coach Mike Petrino. This spring, Brian Holsinger was named the Lady Griz' new head coach.
