Local Golf Report: MSU-Northern tourney format was fun

From Tee to Green

I know everybody loves a good scramble. But, scrambles aren't the only fun golf tournament format, and this past weekend's Northern Golf Tournament at Prairie Farms proved just that.

Traditionally, that tourney has always been a four-person scramble, but, this year's event, which raises money for MSU-Northern Athletics, was altered some, including playing an alternate shot format on Par 5's and best ball on Par 3's, while keeping the scramble format for all four Par 4's. And as someone who has been playing tournament golf in Havre for more than 20 years now, I'll just say, Saturday's format was a blast. I felt like it was for one, more challenging than a traditional scramble, and secondly, it was a really nice change of pace for golfers who play the scramble tourney circuit all summer long. So, to all of the organizers of the Northern tourney, job well done. It was a great format.

Also that day, I happened to play with the winners of the event, as Golden Spike repeated as tourney champs. Jared Weigel, Jamie Young, and Lorrie and A.J. Keller composed the winning team. Prairie Farms, which was made up of Chad Spangler, Doug Sheppard, Greg Mosness and Barry Kato took second, while Erickson Insurance, made up of Jeremy Jensen, Mike Erickson, Kyle Miller and Scott Miller was third.

Tournament action will continue all summer long. Last Saturday also saw the HEDA Tournament at Beaver Creek Golf Course, while this weekend features the Natalie Patrick Foundation Tournament at Prairie Farms, and on June 26, the Havre Wrestling Club Scramble comes to BCGC.

League golf keeps chugging along as well.

Last Tuesday night at Prairie Farms, Wagner Plumbing was high team, while Jeff Jensen and Kyle Sheppard tied for low gross, each with a 1-under 35. Adam Chvilicek was low net with a 32. Last Wednesday night saw Jeremy Jensen go low with a 2-under 35 for low-gross honors, while Ryan Bakke was low net with a 29 and Master Sports was high team.

Last Thursday night, the ladies played through the rain, with Patrick Construction and NMH both taking high-team honors. The team was made up of Katie Heath, Sue Armstrong, Jade McCormick and Carolyn Patrick. NMH was composed of Carol Culp, Mary Pizzini, Sara Edgar and Jamie Britt. Ali Ward shot 39 for low gross and Katie Heath and Jamie Young shared low net at 33.
