Northern spikers complete 2021 schedule

MSU-N to host Frontier Preseason Volleyball Tournament

In just two weeks, the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team, under veteran head coach Jerry Wagner, will start prepping for their second season of 2021. That's right, the Skylights get another chance this year due to COVID-19.

Northern played a Frontier Conference schedule this past spring, which made up for the canceled 2021 season last fall. That schedule was played with no fans and was a three-month whirlwind. Now, the Skylights and the rest of the Frontier will get back to a much-more normal schedule. MSU-N released its volleyball schedule not long ago.

And that schedule will be an exciting one for Northern fans as the Armory Gymnasium hosts the first-ever Preseason-Frontier Conference Tournament. The event will be a round-robin, two-day tourney with all league teams in attendance, and will wrap up the preseason Sept. 17-18 in Havre.

The season for the Skylights, who return a very veteran squad this fall, starts with a big trip to Arizona Aug. 25-28 where the Skylights will play teams at the Ouaz Tournament in Gilbert and the Arizona Christian Tournament, which will pit them against western NAIA powers such as Embry-Riddle, ACU and former Frontier powerhouse Lewis-Clark State.

Northern will also travel to Dickinson, North Dakota, Sept. 10-11 for the North Star Conference Challenge. There, MSU-N faces Dickinson State and Valley City State twice before returning to Havre for the preseason tourney.

Frontier play then begins for good Sept. 25 as the Skylights open a 10-match conference schedule with a visit from Rocky Mountain College. Northern closes out the month with a road trip to rival Providence Sept. 29.

October begins with a home match on Oct. 2 against Montana Western, followed by a visit to Carroll College Oct. 8 and a trip to Montana Tech Oct. 9. After the annual bye week, the Skylights travel to Billings to take on RMC Oct. 23, before coming home to host the Argos Oct. 27. October ends with a trip to Western Oct. 30, and the Skylights will close out the regular season Nov. 5-6 at home against Montana Tech and Carroll, respectively.

The postseason starts with the Frontier Conference Tournament being held Nov. 12-13 in Helena. Fans can get a first look at the Skylights Sept. 7 with the Northern Alumni Match in the Armory Gymnasium.
