Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Drake Berreth, Havre Northstars

Drake Berreth of Chinook has made a home on the Havre Northstars

In a season that has seen the Havre Northstars American Legion baseball club reach new heights, many players such as Drake Berreth have made contributions along the way. The Northstars have a record of 35-14 this season and have been playing their best baseball over the past month, including a stretch of 15 straight wins. As a member of such a strong squad this season, Berreth has enjoyed the ride.

"It was fun. Doing stuff that hasn't been done in a while for the Northstars. Good to have fun and win games," Berreth said.

Berreth has been playing baseball since the age of five when he signed up for tee ball. Over the years, the Chinook resident has loved the game as it gave him the chance to make new friends in Havre. But just like any sport, baseball also gave him the chance to prove himself.

"Just competition. Pretty much with all sports I play, it's just competition," Berreth said on what he enjoys about baseball.

In addition to baseball, Berreth also competes in football and wrestling in Chinook. In football, he plays linebacker and wide receiver. Outside of sports, his favorite hobby is to hunt deer with his family.

During this summer for the Northstars, the 16-year-old has made an impact on both sides of the plate. Throughout the season, he has aided the Northstars' offense with his .259 batting average, .377 on-base percentage, 23 RBIs and 27 runs scored. He has also been efficient on defense as he is second on the team with a .962 fielding percentage.

Berreth and the Northstars will finish up their season this weekend as they host the State A tournament at Legion Field. The Northstars will begin the tournament tonight at 7:30 p.m. against the Glacier Twins. Before they begin their quest for a state title, the Havre Daily News got the chance to ask Berreth a few questions.

HDN: What has driven you to become the player you are now?

Berreth: "Probably my parents. Just all they've done for me to be who I am. All they gave up for me to do what I've wanted to do."

HDN: Do you have a favorite baseball memory?

Berreth: "My 9U year when we were playing all-stars. Getting MVP for making a diving catch in the outfield. Probably my favorite memory."

HDN: As a baseball player, do you enjoy batting or fielding more? Why?

Berreth: "Probably batting. I just feel like it's in my control what I can do, what happens. I control what's going to happen."

HDN: What do you enjoy about football?

Berreth: "The contact, it's physical. Just being aggressive."

HDN: What do you enjoy about wrestling?

Berreth: "My friends. Hanging out with them. Going to the meets and hanging out with friends and having fun."
