Hi-Line Football: Fort Benton runs away with victory over Cascade

Hi-Line Football Roundup

After opening the season with a dominant win over Ennis, Fort Benton 8-man football kept it going this past Friday with a 52-8 win over Cascade to move to 2-0 on the season. The Longhorns running game led them to victory again as they finished the night with 378 total rushing yards.

At the head of that rushing attack was Colter Ball, who ran for 139 yards and three touchdowns on 10.7 yards a carry. He was effective in goal-to-go situations with a five-yard and a six-yard touchdown. He also made big plays on the ground with a 47-yard touchdown run.

While the Longhorns used their ground game to build a lead, their defense clamped down on Cascade. At halftime, Fort Benton already had a 32-0 lead. The Badgers did not even score until the fourth quarter when the game was already in hand for the Longhorns.

With a 2-0 record, Fort Benton hopes to keep its undefeated start to the season going when they face Rocky Boy on the road this Friday night at 7 p.m.

Hot Springs 33, Big Sandy 19

After a stellar season that saw Big Sandy six-man football go undefeated until a loss in the postseason, 2021 is not off to the best start. Last weekend, the Pioneers lost to White Sulphur Springs to open the season. With a 33-19 loss to Hot Springs on the road, Big Sandy is now 0-2 this fall.

The Pioneers kept pace with Hot Springs early as they only trailed 14-12 at the half. But the Hot Springs offense came out hot in the second half for three straight scores to pull away.

Kyle Lawson had a strong performance with five touchdowns against the Pioneers. Not only did he catch three touchdowns from his quarterback Jack McAllister, but he also ran for two on the ground.

If the Pioneers are going to get in a groove for a postseason run, Big Sandy head coach Larry Jappe will need to get his defense tightened up. Big Sandy will look to get their season on track when they host Savage this Saturday.

Chinook 54, Shelby 14

In the first quarter of Friday night's game, Chinook scored six points to take the lead. But in the second quarter, their offense led by quarterback Levi Jensen and running backs Hunter Molyneuax and Tyler Schoen exploded to put up 30 points in the quarter and give Chinook a 36-0 lead at the half.

With the win, the Sugarbeeters are now 2-0 to start the season. They will next play at home against Harlem this Friday night at 7 p.m.

Chinook 6 30 6 12 - 54

Shelby 0 14 0 0 - 14

Chester-Joplin-Inverness 63, Harlem 0

In a matchup between 1-0 teams, Chester-Joplin-Inverness came out on top Friday night with a dominant 63-0 win over Harlem. The Hawks offense led by quarterback Kyle Harmon and running back Nate Nelson jumped on Harlem early to build a formidable early lead. In just their second game in 8-man football, the Harlem Wildcats were outmatched.

With the win, the Hawks have already surpassed their win total of one from last season. CJI is now 2-0 and will next play at home against Hays Lodgepole this Friday night at 7 p.m. Harlem is 1-1 and will try to rebound on the road against Chinook this Friday night.

Valier 20, North Star 12

After a shootout loss to open the season, North Star found themselves in a defensive slugfest against Valier on Saturday. However, the result remained the same as North Star lost, 20-12, and fell to 0-2 on the season.

After a 2020 season that saw the team only win one game, the Knights have not broken through to prove they have improved from last year. If they are going to turn it around, the offense led by quarterback Gavin Spicher will need to be more consistent. Their defense with players such as Rhett Wolery and Ty Hanson will also need to step up.

North Star will try to get their first win of the season when they head on the road to play Hot Springs this Friday night.

Rocky Boy 67, Great Falls Central 26

Unlike most teams across the Hi-Line, Rocky Boy 8-man football did not open their season until this past weekend. But once they got on the field, they put on a show as they defeated Great Falls Central, 67-26, on Saturday.

Kellen Colliflower led the explosive offense at quarterback. Their defense led by the likes of Joe Demontiney and Sean Gibson also had a solid day on defense limiting their opponents' offense.

After opening the season 1-0, Rocky Boy will next play at home this Friday night when they host formidable Fort Benton.

Box Elder 76, Heart Butte 37

Another team opening their season this past weekend, Box Elder six-man football also had a strong offensive performance in a 76-37 victory over Heart Butte on Saturday at home. The game also served as the first game with Neil Rosette Jr. leading the Bears as head coach. The Bears relied on playmakers such as King Ragged Rope, Tyrus Lamere and Gabe Saddler to light up the scoreboard.

At 1-0, Box Elder will next play on the road against Bainsville this Saturday.
