As September dawns, the high school volleyball season will really pick up steam now. And it started last week, with a slew of contests.
Last Tuesday saw Fort Benton defeat Chester-Joplin-Inverness in a District 7C match, by scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-19. Tatum Hull had a huge match for the Hawks, but it wasn't enough for CJI to overcome.
North Star also defeated Big Sandy on Tuesday night, but the Pioneers put up a great fight. In a close battle, the Knights prevailed by scores of 25-23, 24-26, 25-14 and 26-24. Kira King had eight kills for the Knights, and Rainee Watson tallied 20 assists and four aces.
In another 7C match on Tuesday, Geraldine-Highwood swept Box Elder by scores of 25-4, 25-10 and 25-8.
In a huge 7C showdown Friday night, Chinook outlasted North Star in a five-set thriller. The Sugarbeeters beat the Knights by scores of 25-19, 25-20, 19-25, 24-26 and 15-8, in a classic match between the two teams.
The Beeters were led by a huge night from Bree Swanson, who had 12 kills, eight blocks and nine aces, while King had eight kills and three blocks for the Knights.
Big Sandy was back on the court on Friday night, and in another tight battle, the Pioneers fell just short, this time losing to DGS in five sets. The Bearkats beat the Pioneers by scores of 22-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22 and 15-8. It was a great match for the Pioneers, who got 14 kills by Amiya Griffith.
Saturday was tournament time for many area teams, including the Chinook Invite. But, several teams continued regular season play, including Harlem sweeping St. Labre, and CJI dominating Centerville. The Hawks beat the Miners by scores of 25-11, 25-19 and 25-15, with Haddie Woods totaling eight kills and four aces.
