MSU-N cross country, golf and rodeo set to start the fall

After a year of sports that was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Montana State University-Northern sports hopes for a more normal year beginning this fall. While MSU-N sports fans will be focusing on the return of football and volleyball, they should not ignore the return of the college's cross country, golf and rodeo teams this fall.

The MSU-N cross country teams will begin their season Sept. 13 with the Frontier Conference Preview in Dillon. They will then head to Missoula for the University of Montana Open Sept. 24. In the month of October, they will compete in the Montana State University-Billings Invite and Inland Empire Meet in Lewistown, Idaho.

The cross country team will return to Havre Oct. 22 for the MSU-Northern Dual to end the regular season. The MSU-N runners hope to then be competing in the Frontier Conference Championships in Dillon Nov. 5 and then hopefully the NAIA Nationals Nov. 19 in Vancouver, Washington.

The Lights return three seniors on their men's team. Field Soosloff returns after he competed in the NAIA Nationals last season and hopes to reach those same heights again. Seniors Eddie Harmon and Liam Baez-Terry and sophomore Brady Albus will also return to run this fall. Freshmen that will be running for the first time for MSU-N this fall will be Jaden Koon, Michael Irvine and August Spottedwolf.

The MSU-N women's team also has several returning runners. Senior Grace Schwenk and junior Allison Tigert will return to run for the Skylights. They will also have four freshmen joining the program this fall in Brooke Holland, Sarah McCormick, Tamera O'Leary and Hannah Haslem.

The MSU-N golf season will begin their season against Montana Tech Sept. 13. They will then compete against University of Providence from Sept. 20-21 and Rocky  Mountain College from Oct. 4-5. The MSU-N golfers hope to be competing in the Frontier Conference Championships in Boise April 18-20 next year.

Ryan Williams will be the lone senior returning to the Lights golf team this fall. Sophomores T.J. Reynolds and Matt Kreuger will also return to golf for the Lights this fall. Freshmen Kyler Cassel and Gerit Johnson will be joining the program this fall.

Senior Megan Vandenacre, junior Jada Sudbrack and sophomore Shaan Danelson will return to golf for the women's golf team after they competed in the Frontier Conference Championship last spring. They will be joined by freshmen Jillann Sure Chief and Maddison Underal.

The MSU-N rodeo will also make their return this fall. They begin their season with a rodeo at Northwest Community College from Sept. 11-12. They will then compete in rodeos at Dawson Community College and MSU-N in September. Oct. 1-2, they will compete at University of Montana, Western to complete the fall part of their schedule. The MSU-N rodeo team will begin the spring portion of their season at Montana State University April 7. They will then finish their season with rodeos at Miles City Community College, University of Providence and University of Montana in the month of April.

The men's rodeo team will have many young cowboys this year. Sophomore Rope Three Iron will return after he rode in the College National Finals Rodeo this past spring. Sophomore Lincoln Yarama will also return for the Lights. They will also have several freshmen joining the program in Garrett Cunningham, Chance Story, Justin Three Irons and Taylor Young.

The women's rodeo team will have many riders return from last season. Senior Kassidy Williamson will come back after she rode in the College National Finals Rodeo last season.

While these programs will go through much of their seasons on the road, local sports fans should follow along to see how these athletes represent the Havre community.
