Havre volleyball ready for home and away to end week

The Havre High volleyball team is off to a strong start this season with a 5-1 record. They are currently on a two-match winning streak after a road trip at Sidney and Glendive this past weekend. The Blue Ponies will try to make it four in a row when they play Browning tonight at Blue Pony Gymnasium and on the road Saturday at Lewistown. With two matches in a span of three days, HHS head coach Stephanie Huse hopes to keep her team aggressive.

"Expectations for this week are just to stay consistently aggressive. Offensively to control the ball like we have been all season," Huse said.

The Ponies will start the week with a match at home against Browning. This will be the first meeting between the two teams this season but Huse expects the Indians to provide challenges for her team.

"Browning is athletic. They're tall so they'll present a good challenge as far as their block against our hitters," Huse said. "Then they have a couple of really good servers that all challenge our serve receive."

After playing Browning at home, the Ponies will head on the road to face their rival Lewistown on Saturday. In what will only be their third match on the road this season, Havre will need to keep its composure to play well in hostile territory.

"Every time you go on the road, it's an intense situation. You don't have your crowd, you have their crowd who's loud and cheering for their team," Huse said. "Our focus when we're on the road is just to really only focus on ourselves, listening and communicating as much as possible, staying together as much as possible."

Havre played Lewistown in their season opener at home earlier this month. The Ponies defeated their rival, 3-0, by winning the sets by scores of 25-10, 25-19 and 25-10. However, Huse believes like all the teams in the Northeast A, Lewistown has improved over the course of the season.

"Every team in our conference is improving and getting stronger and better as they learn," Huse said. "We expect them to have improved quite a bit as well with the rivalry attached to this one. Anytime Havre comes to Lewistown, the intensity is amped up a little bit more."

Lewistown will need players such as Brooke Weinheimer to step up if they are going to get revenge against the Ponies. Last season as a sophomore, Weinheimer was named second-team all-conference.

Along with the two matches this week, it has been homecoming week at Havre High School. With all the activities and excitement associated with that, Huse has been making sure her team is focused for the task at hand.

"Mainly just not being too distracted. With homecoming this week, it's been very busy with a lot of activities and a lot of energy," Huse said about her focus this week. "Really making sure that when we're on the court, we're focused and putting as much energy into our practices and getting better which I think will mirror what it's like when we go on the road."

HHS volleyball will play Browning tonight at 7 p.m. at Blue Pony Gymnasium. The Ponies will then head on the road to play Lewistown Saturday at 4 p.m.
