Hi-Line Football: Longhorns clinch top seed for playoffs

The Fort Benton Longhorns suffered their only loss when they went on the road to face Simms last week. This past Saturday, the Longhorns got a shot at revenge when they hosted the Tigers in Fort Benton and this time the teams were playing for the No. 1 seed from the Northern C in the postseason.

With the chance at the top seed and revenge, the Longhorns pulled through for the 35-25 victory.

The Longhorns struck first in the first quarter with a 20-yard touchdown run from Colter Ball for a 6-0 lead. However, the Fort Benton offense then went cold as the Tigers scored 17 unanswered points. As they trailed 17-6 halfway through the third quarter, the Longhorns got their offense back in a groove. Over the final two quarters, Cade Ball threw two touchdown passes to Andrew Ballantyne and Cody Evans to take the lead. Simms attempted a comeback but it was too late as Fort Benton secured its revenge.

With the win, Fort Benton earned the Northern No. 1 seed in the playoffs. The 8-man playoffs will begin Oct. 29.

CJI 34, Choteau 32

After a four-game losing streak through the month of September, the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks got back on track with a 34-32 win over Choteau on the road this past Friday.

The Hawks and Bulldogs battled it out through all four quarters. Both offenses came out hot to start the night. CJI quarterback Kyle Harmon got the scoring started with a five-yard touchdown run and two-point run to take an early lead. However, Choteau responded with two straight touchdowns to take a 14-8 lead. The Hawks answered with a seven-yard touchdown run from Adam Grammar. However, CJI failed to convert the two-point conversion and the score remained tied, 14-14, at the end of the first.

In the second quarter, the teams continued to exchange scores. Harmon connected for his first touchdown pass of the day on a 21-yard throw to his brother Blake Harmon. But Choteau responded with a touchdown of their own for a 20-20 tie at the half.

The CJI offense failed to score in the third quarter while the Bulldogs scored again to take a 26-20 lead heading to the fourth quarter. In the final quarter, the teams went back and forth exchanging leads.

CJI tied the game with a 19-yard touchdown run from Kyle Harmon. Blake Harmon then ran it in for the two-point conversion to give CJI a 28-26 lead. Choteau came right back with a 13-yard touchdown run from Parker Morgan own to take the lead. However, the Bulldogs failed to convert the two-point attempt and only led 32-28. Kyle Harmon then retook the lead for the Hawks with his third touchdown run of the day. While CJI failed to convert on the two-point attempt, the Hawks held on for the 34-32 victory. With the win, CJI improved to 3-4 on the season.

Chinook 44, Cascade 13

This fall has gone well for the Chinook Sugarbeeters and this past Saturday was no different as the Sugarbeeters defeated Cascade, 44-13, at home. Just like it has done all season, the Chinook offense got on a roll to light up the scoreboard. Meanwhile, the Chinook defense had another solid day limiting Cascade's offense. With the win, Chinook finished its regular season with a 7-1 record and clinched the No. 4 seed in the 8-man football playoffs that begin Oct. 29.

Big Sandy 46, Valier 14

After making it to the state playoffs semifinals last season, the Big Sandy six-man football team has had another solid season this fall. After starting the year 0-2, the Pioneers have not lost since, including a 46-14 win over Valier on the road this past Friday. Big Sandy has now won six in a row making its record 6-2 on the season. The Pioneers will next play Wednesday when they head on the road to play Power-Dutton-Brady.

PDB 47, North Star 13

The North Star six-man football team has played some tough opponents. In the Knights' previous game, they played and lost to Big Sandy. This past Saturday at home, the Knights faced off against another strong opponent, Power-Dutton-Brady who was 6-1 heading into the game. The Knights were unable to keep up with the Titans as North Star lost, 47-13. With the loss, North Star is 1-6 and will next play on the road at Heart Butte Wednesday.

Rocky Boy 30, Harlem 16

This past Friday in Rocky Boy, the Harlem and Rocky Boy 8-man football teams met up again for the second time this season. In their previous meeting back on Oct. 4 in Harlem, Rocky Boy defeated Harlem, 64-18. While Harlem put up a tougher fight this past weekend, Rocky Boy still pulled out the 30-16 victory. Rocky Boy is now 3-4 on the season and Harlem is 1-6.
