Blue Pony harriers race to final finish line

Havre High cross country teams run at State A in Missoula

The cross country season has been a marathon for the Blue Ponies the past two months. Along with trying to improve their times each and every meet, they also needed to make sure they were healthy and rested for postseason competition.

Now the marathon of their season comes to an end as the Ponies head to the State A meet this Saturday in Missoula. With this being the last race of the season, HHS head coach Erin Lynch hopes her runners can run at their best this weekend.

"I'm just hoping everyone has a good race this weekend. They finished out the season strong," Lynch said.

Over a hundred schools from Class A will compete at the meet trying to win a state title. On the boys side, Lynch expects Miles City to be one of the top teams while Lewistown should lead the way in the girls meet. Other notable schools at the meet this weekend include Hardin, Box Elder, Fort Benton, Glendive, Harlem, Hays-Lodge Pole and Livingston.

Several Ponies will look to finish their strong seasons with a solid showing at state. Caleb Tomac heads into the state meet with three first-place finishes this season and a personal-best time of 16:31.6. Hailey Gingery will also try to improve on her personal-best time of 20:49.9 this season.

The races will be held at the University of Montana golf course in Missoula. While it should not be a challenging course, there are some hairpin turns and a decent hill for the Ponies to overcome. But this will not be the first time the Ponies have run on this course as they raced in the Mountain West Classic last month.

"That's one of the reasons why going to the Mountain West Classic is such an important race for us," Lynch said. "Getting to actually experience the course is an advantage for us."

With the season coming to an end this weekend, not only does Lynch want her runners to finish strong on the track this weekend but she also wants them to continue building the friendships that they have all season long.

"(I want to see) the camaraderie amongst one another that I've seen throughout the season. I want to see them continue the friendships that they've built," Lynch said.

The Ponies will run in the State A meet at the UM golf course in Missoula this Saturday.
