Area volleyball teams advance

Three area teams are headed to the Northern C Divisional Volleyball Tournament later this week. That's because, Fort Benton, Chinook and Chester-Joplin-Inverness all finished in the top four at last weekend's District 7C tourney in Chinook.

The District 7C championship went to Geraldine-Highwood, which beat defending 7C champion Fort Benton in the championship match Saturday afternoon.

The Longhorns had reached the chipper with a 25-27, 25-15, 25-17 and 25-17 win over Chinook earlier Saturday in the third-place match. Fort Benton's march toward a third straight berth in the Northern C came by way of an opening-round win over Centerville and a sweep of Chinook, by scores of 26-24, 25-19 and 25-20 Thursday. The 2-0 start to the tournament put the Longhorns into Friday night's undefeated semifinal where they fell to the Rivals by scores of 25-18, 22-25, 25-21 and 25-20, before bounding back to beat Chinook Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Sugarbeeters started their run to the Northern C with a sweep of Big Sandy Thursday, before falling to the Longhorns. Chinook rebounded to beat rival North Star Friday, by scores of 25-7, 25-11 and 25-14, whi9ch put the Beeters into the fourth-place match Saturday morning. There, Chinook took on CJI, with the Beeters prevailing by scores of 25-21, 21-25, 25-13 and 25-13 to advance to the divisional tourney.

CJI is also headed to the Northern C. The Hawks opened 7C play with a win over North Star Thursday, followed by a loss to the Rivals Thursday night. On Friday, CJI knocked out Big Sandy by scores of 25-27, 25-23, 25-17 and 25-17 to advance to the fourth-place match.

The Harlem Wildcats are also headed to the next round of the postseason after they finished fourth at last week's District 2B in Wolf Point.

Friday, Harlem fell to Malta by scores of 21-25, 25-21, 25-15 and 25-16 but bounced back to defeat Poplar by scores of 25-12, 25-15 and 25-12. That put the Wildcats into the fourth-place match where they lost to Wolf Point in five sets, but still advanced to this weekend's Northern B in Glasgow.

Meanwhile, the four teams from the 7C, plus the top four teams from last week's 6C Tournament will meet at the Northern C in Belt Thursday-Saturday.
