Montana State to offer course for family and consumer science teachers and Extension agents

BOZEMAN — Registration is now open for “Teaching Nutrition and Culinary Sciences,” an online course offered by Montana State University Extension and Academic Technology and Outreach.

The course is aimed at new and experienced consumer and family science teachers, Extension agents, and other professionals who are looking to improve their skills and confidence in food and nutrition-related teaching and outreach.

The course will run from Jan. 24 through March 20. It consists of self-paced weekly readings, videos and assignments that are online and will require one-to-two hours to complete. There are required live virtual sessions scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Mondays, Jan. 31, Feb. 14 and 28, and March 14.

Upon completion participants will be able to find and explain research-based individual and family nutrition guidance, understand food science principles and practice culinary skills, and explore and apply food and nutrition direct education best practices.

Brianna Routh, food and family specialist with MSU Extension and an assistant professor in the Department of Health and Human Development at MSU, will teach the course. She is a registered dietitian nutritionist with a master’s in public health nutrition and a doctorate in human development and family studies. She has been leading research-based food preservation outreach and evaluation efforts in Montana since 2018.
